Program: Avenues of Service

Chris Parr Feldman introduced today’s program: A Rotary Informational Meeting

Five speakers each took five minutes to describe the committee work they do for Rotary at the local and international levels.

Group Study Exchange - Chris Parr-Feldman
GSE is a cultural exchange program that fosters international cooperation and helps promote the development of business skills in an increasingly global community. Chris visited Manila, numerous club member have been part of this international exchange of ideas and people. This year’s program is an exchange with Nigeria.

Vocational Committee - Gail Johnson
Vocational Service began with the idea of bringing together people form various professions and to apply high standards to the workplace. Each Club or District defines their own Vocational Programs. In many cases, community service is tied in with the vocational work. Our club is currently working to set up a Career Day at Roseland University Prep. Other work has included: Helping to fund the Ridgway High School Library; Academic Project at Piner High School- recognizing exceptional students; Scholarship Program at Ridgway High School for JC bound students; Speech Contest open to all westside schools, providing cash awards.

International Service - Bo Kirshen
Projects include:
Clean Water project in Peru
Festival of Brotherhood
Project Amigo
Sponsorship of students at the University of Colima
Purchase of a cerebral endosopy machine for a Guadalajara Hosptila
Purchase of a brick making machine for a community group in Guadalajara

Community Projects - Chris Young
The dictionary program was Chris’ introduction to Rotary. He heads up the distribution of dictionaries throughout Santa Rosa every year.
Graffiti Abatement at the City contacts Chris and he gathers a team to paint over the graffiti around town.

Rotary Foundation - Brian Herndon for Harry Rubins
Rotary Foundation is designed to secure project funding through an endowment process. 50% of donations come back to the district and the rest is invested for three years. Money is then available through matching funds and grants for local and international projects. The club goal this year is $140 average per member and 100% participation at any level.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards - Jim Underhill
RYLA was started in 1952 to assisted young people in developing leadership skills. Locally young people attend a week-long camp AT Westminster Woods aimed at developing personal and leadership skills. Keynote speakers provide motivational presentations and "grab bag" projects and activities provide practical experience and development of skills.
