Scenes from Prez Mike's Debunking

Pacific Central Region for
the U.S. Coast Guard

President Louie Capuano
"Welcome to the Best Club with the Best Members in the World!" was the introduction given by our illustrious leader King “Light Fingers” Louie, this week (and every day for that matter, more on the “Light Fingers” later). Seems to make the group a little nervous, but as long as he doesn't continue with "The product sells itself" I think the club can take it.

Pledge: Harry Rubins

The Rotary Moment:

The Rotary Moment was from Chris (I like Yoga) Rosell. A quote from Ghandi. Something about harmony and friendship and families and compassion and kindness, and helping and concern and respect and ending with the importance of having a peaceful mind and heart.

Bob Marigo Chris knew that Marigo would go ballistic over it, which made Chris smile....so much for love and harmony. By the way, many of you may not know that Chris is really into yoga. He can twist himself into a pretzel. Just ask him to demonstrate sometime. He can also twist himself around a fence post, but that is another story.

Introduction of visiting Rotarians:

Bill Gittins (who can read names without looking at the audience –Ed J) introduced the visiting Rotarians. Bill Gittins

Sarah Castelain Guests included John Palmer's son, Scott (great name) and our visiting exchange student Sarah Castelain, who has just recently arrived. She is staying with Susan Nowacki for the first portion of her visit, and she has just returned from the exchange orientation weekend.

Sarah is from the Northern part of France from a town about 2 hours north of Paris. We will be hearing a lot more from Sarah in the coming months, and the club gave her a warm welcome.

Announcements:

John Meislahn had nothing to report on the Crab Feed. Hmmmmmm?

On September 6th there is a Rotary Foundation Seminar happening from 10am to 2pm. Harry Rubins will be attending, and if anyone else is interested, just give Harry a call for details.

Gail Johnson wants everyone to start thinking about the coming year and potential candidates to participate in the Student Exchange program from our end visiting a Rotary Club somewhere else in the World.

Gail also reminded us that they are still looking for host families for the second and third portion of Sarah's visit. If anyone would be interested in being a host family, just give Gail a call. She and Don hosted last year's exchange student and Gail is now a Counselor for the program. Gail says being a host family was one of the most fulfilling things she has done with Rotary.

The Board meeting is scheduled for 12 noon on Tuesday, Sept. 9th. Red Badgers take note.

September 22 is the Bartley BBQ, at Ginny Pitts' place on Olivet Road. We will need a few hands to help with it. If you are able to, just let Ginny or me know. Also that event takes place on Monday night, so we will be dark that day at lunch.

Robin Marrs presented King Louie with a check from RI for $3000 for the Ukrainian Diabetes program. In November Paul Stychno and Pete Lamonica will be heading over to the Ukraine on behalf of Rotary.

And Finally!!!! Bob Marigo was invited to lead our newest member, his son, Ed Burr up to be inducted formally. I know a lot of you have commented on the strong family resemblance but really they are not related...they just work out at the same gym.

Ken Prouty, Ed Burr & Bob Marigo
Ken Prouty had the honor of inducting new, old member Ed. For those of you who are newer to the club, Ed had been a member of our club, joining for the first time in 1991, before moving to Texas a few years ago, now he is back and we are going to put him to good use. Ed is working on this year's Crab Feed, as he has had extensive experience with it (actually, it was his wife, Suzanne, who did all the work). He also has served on our Board, but neither he nor I can remember anything he did there.

Ron Street changed classification from real estate to fashion model for really ugly shirts, but Tommy Bahama sure loves him...$20 for the change and the new Avalanche he has just bought.

And Mr. Gittins has somehow misplaced his cell phone….has anyone seen it? Ring! Ring! Well, as a matter of fact King “Light Fingers” Louie has! I t turned up mysteriously in his pocket. (Seems that while Bill was making eye contact with the visiting Rotarian cards in his hand, Louie’s hand was quicker than Bill’s eye. Snatch!!!! And he did it without an accomplice – EdJ)....$10.

Recognition:

Now time for the roving King Louie to start his rounds....

First stop, John Palmer, being recognized for his anniversary. He is proud to say that it is 47 years!!! Oops...our records say it has been 48 years. Which is it Scott? The son says 48...oh, well, John, you were close....48 years equals $50!

Ron Allen celebrated his anniversary on the 17th, by taking his wife to look at cars. But very NICE cars! Ron Allen

Roger Olson offered up $10 as a thank you for Rotary's assistance in the Air Show this last weekend.

Joe Perez  Joe Perez also threw in $10. It was a great success this last weekend.
Chris Parr did it!!! 58 miles on her bike as a fundraiser for the Breast Care unit at Sutter. She was the oldest gal there, and finished! (Chris is just amazing!!!! -Ed J) Someone asked how her legs were. If it were me sitting on a bike for 58 miles, it wouldn't be the legs that took the abuse....$20 Chris Parr
Neil Silverman Neil Silverman is celebrating his 37th anniversary. Because he loves paying money so much he will pay $10!
Terry Galazzo offered up a $10 payment to plug the gala dinner at St. Francis Winery on Sept 4th for Kid Street Theater. It will be a sit-down dinner with auction at a really beautiful winery (OK, so I plug my own work). Call Terry for ticket information. Terry Galazzo

Jim Hinton Jim Hinton was recognized for being here 2 weeks in a row….OUCH! Jim protested about his $40 fine last week, King Louie let him off fine free for the Golf Tournament he did well on last Friday.

Gail Johnson is back here after a little illness and was recognized to the tune of $10. She offered to boost it to $100 towards her granddaughter's Paul Harris.

Mr. Zeni tried for the marble and Mr. Reinking got the bottle of wine!

PROGRAM

Mike Moore & Jean Sharley
Mike Moore first introduced Jean Sharley of the Navy League

Ms.Sharley then introduced this week's program speaker, Coast Guard Admiral-Select Timothy Sullivan, head of the Pacific Central Region for the United States Coast Guard.Captain Sullivan works out of Alameda and the Pacific region covers all the western states and the pacific for the coast guard.

He gave a good overview of the service and its duties and responsibilities in regard to the protection of our waterways. The job of the Coast Guard has changed since 9/11 from that of being the "firemen" to being the "police" as a lot of the homeland security measures protecting us are duties of the Coast Guard.

Check out the Coast Guard website for more information.
