Brian & Alicia Herndon
There were two guests…the aforementioned Brian Herndon introduced his daughter, Alicia.  (He brought her to Rotary to celebrate her birthday. Cheap! Cheap!)  Bob Marigo introduced his “son,” Ed Burr.

Announcements

Bill Dodson, Club Service Chair, expressed the continuing need for assistance before, during and following each meeting.  He needs folks to set up each week beginning at 11:30 AM.   PLEASE NOTE: ALL Red Badges (NEW MEMBERS) are to do “set up” for 8 meetings during their first year of Club membership.

Harry Rubins, Chair of the “Please Give A Lot and Often” Committee reminded us of the “Pinot for Polio” fund raiser scheduled for August 10th from 2 to 7 PM at the Luther Burbank Center (LBC).  All the proceeds go toward the Polio Plus efforts to eradicate polio from the face of the earth.

Jeff Ray, Chair of the “Get Out and Get Healthy” Committee, reminded us of the Annual Club Golf Tournament (August 8th at Bennett Valley Golf Course) and the Snoopy Ice Show on December 11th ($27.50 per person)…15 seats remain.

John Meislahn, the NEW Crab Feed Chair, announced an initial Crab Feed committee meeting during lunch at the office of Ed Burr (Marigo’s son!) on August 8th.  Meislahn is providing lunch!

Past Prez Mike Moore announced the Association of Rotary Clubs would be meeting at the Dutton Ranch on July 31st.  Any Rotarian can attend.  See Mike...maybe he is buying. (By the way Mike...NICE car!!!!)

Sowing the Seeds of Love

Bob Marigo, seen here giving spontaneous hugs to a number of our “questionably receptive” members, is apparently still practicing the theme of last years Rotary International President Bhichai Rattakul.  Bob, the new theme for this year as espoused by our new Rotary International President Jonathan Majiyagbe is “Lend A Hand”.  (Next week if Bob approaches you and wants to shake your hand...just let him. J)

Fines & Recognition

John Withers was asked by Louie Impersonator, Past Prez Mike Moore, “Is your hearing aid on?”  It was.  It seems Withers escorted Jim Hinton around San Diego.  Hinton wasn’t around today…lost in San Diego?  Moore speculated Withers probably owns the naval base there…just a part of his diversified rental empire.  To which Withers gave the retort of the year and maybe the last decade… “I didn’t sell MY company to the Japanese!”  Moore was speechless…an amazing feat…$5 Lost Member Fee. (Nice shot, John!!)

Jeri Arnold Jeri Arnold sparred with Past Prez Mike…new car for her daughter 6 months ago and a vacation in Las Vegas for her husband’s birthday.  Seems that unbeknownst to her (but certainly appreciated by her husband Joe) they found themselves in the middle of a Hooters convention at the Paris Hotel.  My notes are not totally clear but it appears her husband enjoyed the convention…one Hooter from each state of the Union.  Jeri said she had fun watching her husband!  She was recognized for “two” events.  Mike didn’t elaborate.  ($10…$5 each??)

Don Ling “Stealth Member” Don Ling celebrated 44 years of marriage to Carol on July 11th.  “Mr. Happiness” (Mike’s words, not mine) paid $15.

Susan Nowacki Susan Nowacki also celebrated a wedding anniversary...32 years with Dean. Something about power tools, a hot rod, a vacation in Shasta and Oregon, boating, and family...$20.

Janet Codding & Mike Moore Janet Codding. Mike opened with “What’s with the doo?” (...as in hairdo).  Seems she wanted to spend $45 for a new coiffure for her coif. Yes, corn rows. Do they plow them or braid them? Did a coiffeur, or a coiffeuse do it?  We may never know and Janet may not remember at this point...Coifs, Tequila, and Cozumel don’t mix. $15.

Steve Wright Steve Wright, last week’s “verbally agreed to” Bulletin Reporter...Oops...“a miscommunication” he said. Choice offered up by Past Prez Mike Moore was writing the next five Bulletins or $25. $25.

Fred Zmarzly Fred Zmarzly (Hint…there are NO “s’s” in “Smarsly”). Responding from the floor rather than at the “right hand” of the President after what seems like soooooooo many years. Fred agreed to pay for the name on HIS wine label - “Albertia.”  His wife’s name is Alberta...get it!? $15.

Gil Lucas (NOT Gary) celebrated his 30th anniversary (he gave his wife Mara 30 roses) but then he started rambling on about a hog trip to South Dakota and Hooters.  It was very confusing. $15.

Drawings

18 Marbles with $425…BUT no bag of marbles to draw from!  410571...Tom Langley...he’ll get to draw next week (if we find the marbles!).  410556...Joe Perez...donated the wine to the Crab Feed (Feed Chair John Meislahn’s first donation!). Joe preferred gin rather than wine. Wrong contest, Joe.

Speaker

John Stout John Stout is the Manager of the Sonoma County (Charles M. Shultz) Airport. He graduated from Piner High School, North Dakota State University and Northwest Missouri State. Before returning to the area in June 2002, he worked in Minneapolis at the Minneapolis Airport.  He is a private pilot.

Stout acknowledged the efforts of our own Past Prez and PDG Mike Merrill for his help as Chair of the Airline Attraction Committee. He indicated Horizon Airline, a subsidiary of Alaska Airline has “committed” to come to Sonoma County. Horizon is currently developing a “fall schedule” to begin flights to LA and Seattle in “October OR December OR February.” (That is quite a fall we are going to have!)

There will be 3 Horizon flights to LA and 1 Horizon flight to Seattle each day. Cost to LA will be approximately $120 each way. They will need 30,000 passengers per year to break even. The aircraft utilized will be a 70-seat turboprop. Discussions are also being held with Delta Connection for a possible flight schedule to Salt Lake City.

As of today, Sonoma County is “the largest un-served population in the entire United States.”

The Board of Supervisors has approved a study (yes, another study!) for an extended runway. We need 6000 feet. Therefore, 900 feet must be added to the existing runway. The Master Plan must be amended and a consulting firm to develop the proposal is being sourced at this time. A full EIR is also needed....no surprise there!  Estimated years to completion - are you sitting down? - is 8 years! Five years for the study and three for construction.

(They are neck and neck coming into the stretch...the “widening of 101 and the 'runway extension' are side by side making the last turn toward the finish line. Oops...the State just filed for bankruptcy and the feds have closed down ALL the airports in the country because there is no longer any budget for Homeland Security....Take the bus and don’t forget to take a book. It is now 2020 and the bus takes 8 hours to SFO!)

Yet another study was begun in 2001 regarding the replacement of the current terminal. It appears the site map will accommodate up to five gates. However, the current study has been placed on hold by the FAA since there a currently “no passengers” using the existing facility.

REACH helicopters recently reached (no pun intended...really!) a new agreement with the airport regarding facilities and costs.

(Did you hear that folks in the West County are raising Tiger Salamanders for sale to Anti-Runway folks?)
