President Louie Begins to "Lend a Hand" in Brisbane, Australia

"The damn Los Robles sound system isn't working right, again !!!!" complained Mr. Marigo. But no, that wasn't the sound system, although it has been know to make similar sounds before…..it was none other than THE Don Johnson, immediate past president of the Windsor Club and significant other to our own *Gail Johnson, demonstrating his mastery of the mellow tones of the Didgeridoo.

The purpose of the serenade? What else, but the coronation of our new President King Louie (Capuano) the First. Louie is just back from the RI Convention in Brisbane (it's pronounced Brisbin). And being thus returned sported the glowing aura befitting The Sun King. Oh wait, that isn't a golden aura….it's a giant Rotary cog wheel.

Ray Scofield led us in the Pledge and John Meislahn gave a heartfelt invocation.

Tarina Hall did a great job with the visiting Rotarians.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

So many announcements, so little time!

This week our recently returned from Austin, Texas former member Ed Burr was introduced by Ginny!

Gail Johnson and Jim Hinton introduced for the last time Rafaela Magalhaes Silva our Club and the Windsor Club's exchange-student, from Brasilia, Brazil. Rafaela (“Hafa”) is returning to her home after spending the last school year here in the US. Her last host family the Hinton's, and prior to that, the Johnson's, both will miss her, as will the rest of the club. She thanked the club and all the members for their hospitality and said how sad she was to have to leave.

This coming Sunday is one of the most important events of the Rotary year. The Debunking, of our former President, Mike Whats-His-Name, seen here in a rather dazed state. Well, it happens when you are recently released from all of that presidential responsibility. Actually, Past President Mike is “making the rounds, reaching out, going where no Past President has gone before...to strange new tables.”

Another Past President, Mr. Jim Valinoti (’97-’98), who was at our meeting for the second week in a row, will once again be cooking for us, at the Debunking!!!!!! The theme of this Debunking is golf, so be sure to wear your best knickers and argyle socks...i.e. golfwear....

Well, this isn't really an announcement, but Past President Mike What's-His-Name was called forth to relinquish his President's pin. He did, but only when presented with his OFFICIAL PAST PRESIDENT'S pin. And, oh how the mighty have fallen. He is so ashamed that he won't even sit in his old chair at "the table". Not that we mind, but he did promise to take Marigo with him when he moved. I like that idea....I think it's time for Marigo to start circulating among the tables. Better for all the club to experience him... (Oh, just giving you a bad time, BOB...we love you.)

On August 11th we will be dark. We will be meeting on the 15th at the Flamingo for a special program. Mark your calendars.

August 10th is the date of the Pinot Polio fundraiser for the Polio Eradication Program. Next week Harry Rubins will have tickets and more information about this event.

RECOGNITION

Lets see, Marigo - who else? What's this? A luxury vacation sleeping on the floor in beautiful Quincy? Wow, doesn't get any better. Even after 44 years of doing it. But he caught a 14" trout. At $1.50 an inch, that makes $20 fine with rounding error!

Chuck Stark celebrated his anniversary, no, a birthday, no....oh damn that program! Actually, it was WinAnn's birthday. And, while I won't repeat it here, he announced WinAnn's age to everyone!!! WOW! Also made some reference about giving her 3 grand children. Now I don't want to go there, but...?????? $10

And also in the birthday dept, Chuck's Dad, Tony Stark, is going to be celebrating his 88th B-Day! On the 25th....$10

Paul Stychno is going to be celebrating his anniversary. Oops, no wait - I mean his birthday. He will either be here or in the Ukraine on the day. $10

Gil Lucas is celebrating Anniversary number 30 - $10!

And our own PDG Mike Merrill is celebrating his anniversary, too! And his S.O. Maureen McDaniel is right here to help! He said it was #15, but it hasn't been that long that they have been married, is it?? I think he must have been using Mike Moore cumulative accounting to come up with that! Well, he paid $15 anyway! Congratulations!

Celebrating an anniversary on the 8th, 13 years of it, is John Meislahn. Boy, District Governor material if I have ever seen it!!!

Fred Zmarzly has a birthday coming up. Must be January 22...that damn program!!! $10 anyway, for the big 64!

Rich Standard is about to celebrate birthday number 57. God, he is OLD!!! $10.

As you can see from the fine list, our new President King Louie the First is always looking for dirt on fellow members for fining material. He will run out of birthdays, anniversaries and deaths before too long at this rate. Do your fellow Rotarians a favor: rat on them!!

And now for a little Rotary International Convention memories, from some Past Presidents.

Past President Ken Kushnir (’88-’89) was sent by the club to Philadelphia. Highlights of the convention for Ken were the camaraderie and he particularly liked the California Breakfast.

I was sent to Melbourne Australia for my convention. Really exciting trip. The reception the people of Australia gave Rotary was amazing. As for the most memorable part, while at the meeting I said it was the dinner (rack of lamb, medium rare), it actually was the home hospitality where by a fluke I accompanied Wally Lowry as a stand in for his wife, Ellie, to the house of a retired Jacaroo (cowboy) who also happened to have a very extensive wine cellar.

Former Minnesotan and Past President/PDG John Withers (’68-’69/’73-‘74) was sent to exotic far off Minneapolis, to a place at least several blocks from where he grew up. Wow, now that would make for a memorable International Convention!

Past President Richard Standard (’98-’99) went to Indianapolis for his convention. Really was impressed by the scale and accomplishments of Rotary. He was impressed by the flag ceremony, where the flags of all the nations in Rotary were presented. That is an incredible sight to see. He also managed to squeeze in some time to visit a jazz club or two while there.

Past President Jim Benoit (’87-’88) was sent to Munich for his convention. The hospitality and graciousness of the citizens of Munich impressed him.

President Elect Jim Hinton will be going to Osaka, Japan next year for his convention, but he and Carolyn will once again be reunited with their recently departed Rotary Youth Exchange student, “Hafa”, because Jim has graciously made arrangements for her to attend the flag ceremony at the convention in Japan. Ola, Hafa, and Bravo, Jim!!!

Well, enough tripping down memory lane, King Louie closed this portion of the meeting by presenting 100 years of Rotary pins to Pres Elect Elect Chris Parr and to Janet Codding, our new Secretary.

RAFFLE

For the money, Tom Laengle - sorry, close but no cigar. It's way too early in the Rotary year for them to actually put the winning marble in the bag.

Lisa Greenfield won the wine and donated it to the Crab Feed.

One final announcement! Club Service Director Bill Dodson is looking for everyone in the club to sign up for some tasks at the meeting for the coming year. Sign up (or be signed up) to introduce visitors, sell raffle tickets, etc.

PROGRAM

Today's program was a review of the International Convention in Brisbane, Australia. Visiting from our club were Mike Merrill and Maureen, Louie Capuano and Linda, Chuck Stark and WinAnn, and Gail Johnson and Don. Don gave us a stirring rendition of "Melancholy Baby" on the didgereedoo, to which Marigo commented, "I've seen a lot in my life, but I have never seen a guy blow anything that big before."

Then members presented slides and talked about the experience of visiting an International Convention. The theme for this Rotary year is "Lend a Hand". There will be more detailed information of the convention on our club’s website in a special section: President Louis International Convention June 2003, so look for it soon.
