Rotarian of the Year

The meeting got a bit out of order at this point as President Louie was so excited to hear who had won the Rotarian of the year award.

Ginny Pitts and Scott Bartley went to the stage to make the announcement.

Ginny began to introduce the recipient mentioning that she worked in the Wine Industry, loved to travel and cook gourmet cuisine, and that she went to the University of Arizona (Ginny of course knowing, that she was giving us the bio of her very good friend and traveling buddy, Tarina Hall, but after a few moments of that………….

Scott interrupted her and let her know that some of the information she had about this year’s winner was not accurate……………. that instead of attending the University of Arizona, she had actually attended the University of Michigan (where indeed Ginny went to school!)

With that, it became all too apparent to everyone who knows Ginny and certainly herself, that indeed she was this years Rotarian of the Year!

Always the clever one, Scott let her think she was announcing her very good friend Tarina.

Ginny was speechless, and quite moved, but did manage to express her gratitude for this honor!

A very deserving recipient our Ginny. Congratulations on a well deserved award!

Kudos to Scott who had this one dialed in to the nines! He even invited Ginny’s Husband Bob and 3 of her kids to help celebrate "Tarina’s" recognition!

Announcements

Many guests were then announced and with that Chris Rosell took the stage to introduce some additional recipients of the funds raised at our annual Crab Feed.

Jim Corbett of Mr. Music received $1500.
He has used the money to start a music program at Roseland/Shepherd school. They have not had a music program for over 10 years.
Michelle Heck accepted $1500 on behalf of YMCA.
These funds were used for their Summer Splash Program.
The Children’s Language and Learning Center was represented by Dr. John Samples and received $2000.
Richard Lopez of Double Punches Boxing Club received $1500.
His organization helps keep people off drugs by providing alternative activities. Each person involved in Double Punches also has to pay a membership fee.
Dennis Hansen appeared on behalf of FISH.
FISH will be able to continue its good works feeding the poor with the $4000 they received. They have been providing their services for over 30 years and fed 48,000 people in 2003.

Craft Talk

We were then entertained with a craft talk by new member Scott Weiss.

He is into both real estate sales and is a manufacturers sales rep selling high tech goods.

Welcome Scott!!

More Announcements

Tarina Hall announced that there would be a crab feed meeting next Monday. It will be for a half-hour right after the regular lunch meeting.

Brian Herndon would like everyone to call him or Jim Hinton if they are planning on attending next year’s convention in Chicago. He will help make sure everyone stays in the same hotel or at least on the same side of town.
President Elect Jim Hinton let us know that his trip to Osaka was a great adventure and he was very grateful to the club for sending him. The opening of the convention had 47,000 people from over 150 nations in attendance!

President Louie did a mass fining of all the members that had not yet been fined.

Janet Codding had her picture in the Business Journal (that she didn’t even know about)
and got fined.

Chris Young had a birthday.

John Withers’ grandson continues to
do great as a track star.

The Program
Our program was a presentation by The Group Study Exchange Team visiting District 5130 from Sao Paolo, Brazil.

They were introduced of course by Chris Parr, who always does an excellent job of welcoming them to our club.

Thanks for your hard work Chris!

GSE was started in 1955 and the group consists of one Rotarian as team leader and 4 members that are not Rotarians.

President Elect Elect, and Past District Group Study Exchange Team Leader & Committee Chair

Chris Parr introduced the program today.
(
Whew! The length of the title is matched only by the amount of dynamite this lady packs with her incredible enthusiasm for Rotary! J -Ed)

This year the Team Leader is Joa Quim, a businessman and English Language Teacher, from the Rotary Club of Ferraz de Vasconcelos. The team members (pictured left to right here) consist of Karen Voss a German & English Teacher, Presidente’ Lou, Team Leader Joa, Braulio Barbosa Pires, and engineer, Fabiola Settani, a dentist, and Katiuscia Sutti Ribeiro, an ESL teacher. They were a warm and friendly group with a great sense of humor. They told us many interesting things about their city and country and also let us know about Rotary in Brazil.

President Lou presided over his last official Board Meeting this past week. He expressed his appreciation for all the hard work we had done the past year and his gratitude for our cooperation in making his year a most successful one. Thanks to you too Lou! – Ed
