The Rotary Moment

Bob F. "Who is that?" exclaimed President Louie.

The mysterious Bob F (so noted on Bill Dodson’s Duty Roster) was replaced by the man known for his many-worded, but eloquently delivered soliloquies, Robert F. Zeni!

Bob gave us another impromptu post-Mother’s Day thought. Thank you, Bob.

Visiting Rotarians

Terry Galazzo Terry Galazzo came to the front of the room to present the two Rotarians who managed to find their way to our club’s meeting today. Wasn’t too hard. They were both from the Windsor Club.

Announcements

Gail Johnson Gail Johnson is still looking for another host family for our exchange student that will be staying with us from Argentina.

Need not be a Rotarian, so if you think of someone who would fit the bill please let her know. Great program, just ask the folks in our club who have had the pleasure of Sarah’s company.

The Sonoma County Association of Rotary Clubs (SCARC) meeting is this Friday at the LBC.

Tomorrow is the monthly meeting of our club’s Board of Directors, at Josef’s.

District Conference is June 16th through June 20th. Call President Lou or PE Jim Hinton for the details.

You can reach either of them by simply opening up your new pocket size roster that you received some weeks ago.

Harry Rubins “F-CHR-XTRDNAIR” (read the previous bulletins for translation) thanked us for the flurry of checks that helped bring our club average for the Foundation to $147/member. The goal was $125. Go Harry! Go Harry! Harry Rubins

John Meislahn updated us on last Saturday’s Fireside at The Geysers. There were 27 in attendance and lunch was provided by President Lou. Was it “crude Creole?”

Past Presidents Mike Moore & Ken Kushnir Past President Mike Moore gave us an update on the most-anticipated Louisiana Bayou theme slated for the demise of President Lou. Louie corrected Mike in that it is proper to “de-throne” a king, not debunk him.

Some confusion about what kind of throne but definitely mark your calendars for a menu promised by Past President Ken Kushnir to include some alligator, spicy crawfish (mudbugs) oysters and other road and bayou kills.

Happens on June 27th at Pete Lamonica’s famous Wikiup Tennis and Swim Club, where the pools are delightful and the day just kind of slips by on you. Thank you, Garson.

Guests

Ken Dansie & BrianCox
Ken Dansie welcomed from Ridgeway School Brian Cox and 4 students who have excelled beyond their first imaginings.

Ginny Pitts introduced to us Sister Mary Murphy who was visiting from an Ecuadorian mission. It’s always nice to meet one of those amazing folks who do all of those wonderful things for others, just because it’s what makes them feel good too! For those of you who don’t already know, Ginny’s husband Bob is quite a humanitarian himself, traveling to South American countries to help with underdeveloped areas, and underprivileged peoples.

Recognition from President Lou

John Palmer John Palmer, that’s pronounced "John Palmer" (yeah, just like it sounds), traveled back in time to Utah where he was trying to trace his ancestors. $10 for the trip.

Chuck Baker went to Ventura country for an auto transmission group meeting. Pretty exciting stuff. Prior to that, though, he took a trip to Yosemite where he hiked up to Yosemite Falls (puff puff).

He also made up a Rotary meeting in the famous Ahwahnhee Hotel. He mentioned something about the cost of the meal but it was lost somehow.

$20 for the trip, Chuck?

Jack Bill Jack Bill headed back to Kentucky and Churchill Downs for another sojourn to the famous Run for the Roses.

Jack had the winning horse and shared some of his winnings ($10 to win) with President Lou.

Ken Dansie welcomes Ridgeway School students
Ken Dansie then brought his guests from Ridgeway to the podium. The Ridgeway Program (supported by SRWR members) recently completed the interviewing process of students that are being considered for vocational scholarships.

4 of the 8 winners of those $500 scholarships to the JC were able to be with us today to be recognized for overcoming the unusual challenges that face them in just getting to and completing their schooling. Ken introduced Brian Cox, Ridgeway counselor, who thanked The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa West.

Ridgeway accepts students from other schools in the District who are disenfranchised from school. When they get to Ridgeway, their goal is to motivate them.

The students joining us today were: Jessica, Sharon, Oscar, and Esau. They will attend the JC and pursue music (Esau), radiology (Oscar), economics (Jessica), and the medical field (Sharon). Esau spoke to us and mentioned that he was glad to be here today representing his school and others like him who are excelling. The Board of Directors voted to provide an additional $500 to students who continue at the JC for a second year.

Raffle

13 Marbles, $550...

David Mc Donald wasn’t able to pick the correct marble for the money, and Tom Laengle later reported that the sheer pleasure he took in writing this bulletin was only achieved by the addition of the wine that he won for his number being pulled for the wine portion of the raffle.

The Program

Vocational Service Director Jeri Arnold Today’s program was our club’s annual Speech Contest. District 5130 decided not to do a district wide contest this year.

Vocational Service Director Jeri Arnold approached our Board of Directors with the proposal to do a Communications Contest (video and spoken). The Board approved $400 for 1st Place and $200 for 2nd Place.

Today we had 5 participants: 2 from Analy High School, 2 from Piner High School, and 1 from El Molino High School.
Jeri Arnold & Student Speech Contestants
Our speaker contestants seen here with Jeri Arnold were, left to right, Krista Lane, Evan Durlester, Kenny Dearmore and Mathew Foremski.
Each speaker has 5 minutes. Jim Benoit was the acting official timekeeper. The topic was this year’s Rotary International theme: “Lend A Hand.”

Speaker 1 was Michael Maloney, a senior from Piner. Michael’s idea was for each of us to do our part to help make the world a better place.

Speaker 2 was Evan Durlester, a sophomore from Analy. His focus was on the importance of generosity, which we all deserve.

Speaker 3 was Krista Lane, a junior also from Analy. She presented the thought that we have to risk the present to lend a hand to the future.

Speaker 4 was Mathew Foremski, a junior from El Molino. He expressed that we need healthier levels of equality in the world.

Speaker 5 was Kenny Dearmore, a senior from Piner. He tries to make the world a better place, one smile at a time.

While we waited for the judges to tally, President Louis filled the time with a bit more recognition:

Bob Marigo was called upon to select a fellow member for the gallows. True to form, he selected sidekick Mike Moore. President Lou, who offered to pony up $20 for his new home in Louisiana, saved Mike.

Jim Sullivan has just 2 ½ wks left at his job before he retires. He says he will work in his vineyard.

And speaking of vineyards: Fred “Emerald Triangle” Zmarzly said his vineyards are doing very well. He has a new crop of green grass growing between the rows of his cash crop - rye grass that is.

Jim Benoit then approached the podium to name the winners.
 - 2nd Place and $200 went to Mike Maloney of Piner High School
 - 1st Place went to Kenny Dearmore, also of Piner.

An outstanding job and the applause reflected it!

Speech Contest Judges Glenn Lurie & Alicia Cronbach with Carson Mitchell
Our celebrity judges were: Glenn Lurie of The Boylan Point, and Alicia Cronbach, (Past President Brian Herndon’s daughter).

Also, in support of their students: Lynette Williamson of Analy, Bridgette Mansell of Piner, and Janet Olsen, principal at Piner. Special thanks to Carson Mitchell, Jim Benoit, and Jeri Arnold for putting this competition together.

President Louis adjourned the Meeting.
