Exchange Student Sarah
Castellain shows us her stay in America!
 |
| President Louie called the meeting to order at
12:25 p.m.. Examining the new microphone apparatus, he said that he felt
like he was talking into a microphone with an Afro. |
Pledge
Jim Sullivan was called upon to recite the pledge. Instead we got
the pre-amble - a 5-minute history lesson on the pledge itself. A few of us
thought this was the program. And then the pledge was recited.

success of the Rotaract Event and the new board members on her committee
- Barbara Larson and Ed Burr. |
 |

|
Foundation Chair Extraordinaire Harry Rubins and PDG Mike
Merrill then asked the new Paul Harris Fellows to come and be
recognized: Ken Dansie, Jim Benoit, Terry Galazzo, Dave McDonald,
Jim Hinton, Mike Moore, Chuck Baker, Janet Codding, Susan Nowacki
and Jim Valinoti (not shown here). |
 |
 |
This was a particularly special day for Past
President Jim Valinoti. His daughter Angie, who was at our meeting
representing the newly installed Rotaract club of Santa Rosa, was also
with us to hear the excellent presentation by our exchange
student, Sarah Castellain. |
| Unbeknownst to Angie, though, she was also to be the
recipient of a new Paul Harris Fellowship bestowed upon her by her
father, Jim. Past District Governor Mike Merrill recognized
Angie, who has been around Rotary for almost all of her life, having
attended meetings and many Holland Kids Exchange barbecues from its
inception in 1982 through the last year of 1998, when she herself was
one of our exchange students with our sister club in Holland. The
Rotary Foundation has raised over $1.4 billion to date going to worthy
projects throughout the world. |
Recognition:
 |
President Louie then came down to walk among the
unwashed public and stopped to say hi to Duncan Holt. He asked
Duncan how the weather was in the northeast. Duncan replied it was 28
degrees at one point and that is why he spent most of his time in
Florida. Duncan relinquished $100 on his own accord to the club. |
 |
Ed Burr was then called upon to describe his recent injuries.
Apparently the story of him breaking his ankle on the golf course is
sticking. He was trying to start the rumor of it being a football injury
or a bad poker game with Marigo, but stuck to the truth: hes a
lousy golfer and saved his score by breaking a bone. 10 bones paid as
the fine. |
 |
The infamous Bob Marigo was asked to stand because President
Louie felt he gets no respect at the Rotary functions he attends in
the district. Louie asked Bob who he would like to see fined - Jim
Sullivan was the reply. Jim got up and complained he just had to
pay for lunch at his whole table because he is a lousy dice player. Bob
fined Jim $20 and the Prez announced it was just a bad day all around
for Mr. Sullivan. |
 |
John Palmer was asked to stand, and when asked
when he was going back down to south, John said in October and was hence
fined only $7. |
 |
President Louie then made it to Teri Evans,
who was visiting us from her new home in Fort Collins, Colorado, where
she does real estate mortgages. President Louie did not fine this
past member but told her we all miss her. |
| Raffle:
PDG Mike Merrills ticket was pulled but he was not successful at
pulling the correct marble.
Wine: Ginny Pitts won the bottle of wine and chose to decline the
gift.
Program:
Sarah Castellain, our exchange student from France, was our
guest speaker today. She presented a fine slide show with the help of
Fox Consulting (Steve and Caroline) that came off without a
hitch. |
|
Sarahs father, Jacques, first came forward to thank the host
families and our club for having hosted her during her stay here in
Santa Rosa. He also presented El Presidente with his Rotary Flag from
Bethune, France. Sarah proceeded to show us pics of her parents and 4
brothers in France. The schools are much different here in the states
and far less strict than in her hometown. |
 |
|
She also gave us a quick economics lesson on France and then showed
pictures of all her travels and activities in the US. She has had a
great time here and will cherish her time with us the rest of her life. |
 |
|
She then had two other exchange students, Kim from Finland and
Suvi from Switzerland, to come up and speak. The best question to
the panel was by Lou Giacometti, who asked the young girls what
they thought of our American young boys? |
 |
|
Kim enthusiastically took the microphone to answer this one first, but
all three of the girls agreed that our boys were more confident when
talking to the ladies and appreciated that quality. They will all miss
their new friends made in Santa Rosa, as we will miss them. Great job,
Sarah! |
|
President Louie thanked Sarah and her father, asked how he could
get signed up to be a Rotary Exchange Student himself and then adjourned
the meeting. |
