President Michael called the meeting to "order" somewhere around the usual time. "Order" is a relative concept. |
Pledge:
Your humble scribe (Past President Jim Benoit J -Ed) led the assembled throng in the pledge.
Rotary Moment:
Judith Light delivered a timely quotation from Homer about the joys and side effects of wine.
President Mike, inspired to cultural heights, dazzled the multitude with his knowledge of The Simpsons.
| Greetings:
New member Jack Bill crisply introduced seven visiting Rotarians. |

Guests of Rotarians:
Chuck Stark and Ray Mattison introduced their guests, Ray for the last time. More on Ray's guest below.
Announcements:
![]() |
Charter President Bill Fisher announced the passing of former member and Charter Secretary, educator Bud Loucks. Bill noted that only he and Carson Mitchell are left of the Charter Members of the club. Bill suggested that the club sponsor a vocational education award, in the name of Bud Loucks. |
(Well, if Ken Davenport were present at the meeting he would have protested his premature demise. According to our roster, Ken is also a Charter Member, having been inducted into our club on April 15th of 1965. April 15th is a confusing day for many people, but certainly not one that Ken has forgotten your court Charter President Bill! J -Ed)
| Janet Codding announced the meeting of the club membership committee Next Monday, October 7, at her house. | ![]() |

New member Bryan Fikes announced the winners of the
football pool at the Bartley BBQ: Pete Lamonica won the first 3
quarters, and Bob Marigo won the $200 final score prize. As Bob
squirmed, President Mike announced that last Thursday was Bob's
birthday (39, Bob?) and that Bob celebrated by going with our CEO,
to the Association of Sonoma County Rotary Clubs meeting. (Pretty exciting Bob! -Ed J) |
Scott Bartley announced that he has $200 from the Bartley BBQ for the Rotary Foundation (Ken Kushnir tattled that he got it out of Bob Marigo's prize envelope).
| Ginny Pitts explained that there was no cost to the club for the Bartley BBQ because each member paid $25. Ginny was the hostess par excellence at her beautiful vineyard estate. This lady is a real resource, and a gracious and valuable asset to our club (editorial comment). President Mike took the occasion to discuss with her Ginny's three-week trip to Paris. No fine, though. | ![]() |
Club Service chair Bill Dodson sent around a signup sheet for volunteers for club service jobs, inviting new members especially to take tasks for four to five times in a row (a la Jack Bill).

Immediate Past President Brian Herndon presented President Mike with a President's Pin, replacing one that got lost by our 39 year old icon/curmudgeon/whipping boy (initials B.M.). Mike was duly gratified. |
Sunshine Report:
Susan Nowacki announced that Phil Talamantes had his gall bladder removed the morning of the meeting, and was doing fine.
On some prompting from Pres. Mike, Ginny Pitts told us about the November 7 Veterans' Day Luncheon at the Veterans Memorial Building. Ginny is selling the tickets ($15/person) for this combined Rotary and Kiwanis event. Each Rotarian is encouraged to bring a veteran. Speakers will include Henry Trione and Ross Liscum.
President Mike said that he had received a very nice letter from District Governor Terri Clark, who was extremely complimentary about the club.
New Member Dorsey Goolsby:
| Janet Codding, with the help of sponsor Ray
Mattison,
inducted new member Dorsey Goosby, an MBA with a background in
commercial real estate development, formerly with Pisenti and Brinker and
other businesses, now a project marketing consultant with Lighthouse
Marketing Solutions.
Welcome aboard, Dorsey. Let's take the time to introduce ourselves to Dorsey and shake his hand. |

Ken Kushnir was quoted in a two-column article in USA Today about the cost of hotel snack food at a hostelry in Tucson. This is the fourth time he has been quoted in USA Today. The fee, after some dickering: $50. |
| President Mike had some fun with the member he proclaimed as the one fertile member of Santa Rosa West Rotary. Kyle Stelling is the very proud father of newborn Hailey Ann Stelling, and will get to match the club's pass-the-hat donation of $345 for her first bank account. The last fertile member of the club was John Meislahn, Kyle's elder by a few years. | ![]() |

Dale Sipe paid $25 and a smile for having gone to Denver for five days to a convention of WWII Navy destroyer service veterans. |
| Bob Harris and Bill Gittins were recognized for the trip they and Jim Valinoti and their better halves purchased two crab feeds back to Ken Davenport's 4000-acre Montana ranch. They had a super time there, and took side trips to Yellowstone National Park and the Little Big Horn. | ![]() |
(One of the high points for me was watching Bob drive around an alfalfa field in the van behind a hay bailer waiting for it to give birth to a 1400 lb bale. The only thing funnier than this was watching Bill running back and forth across that same field trying to photograph this adventure for a future painting...ya just had to be there. -Ed J)

| We finally bagged one of these wild alfalfa beasts and gathered around it for a traditional trophy shot. |
Bill Gittins stood up again to receive recognition for his solo art exhibit, which will occur Sunday, October 27, 2002, at the Fountain Grove Inn and Equus Restaurant from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be hors d'ouvres provided and a no-host bar, and attendees will get to see Bill's award-winning creations and some new pieces as well.
(On another note, Past President Bill should be duly recognized for his latest artistic triumph at the 2002 Sonoma County Harvest Fair;-Ed J)
| And the winner is! |

| Ken Dansie was a year older Sunday. His firm, Andersen & Company, LLP, sponsored a golf tournament at Oakmont last Friday to benefit the Youth Volunteer Corps. His daughter went off to college last week. He missed the Bartley BBQ because he had female houseguests, he said with a smile on his face. | ![]() |
Drawing:
Tarina Hall drew a losing marble from the 23 in the bag, and Roger Olson got a bottle of wine.
Program:
Rotary International's International Youth Exchange Program District Chair of the international youth exchange program Steve ("Mr.Caroline") Fox told us about this admirable initiative of our district.
| The goals of the program are: |
| 1. World peace |
| 2. Education of youth |
| 3. Creation of world leaders |
| 4. Extending the Rotary family worldwide |
Steve is taking this program to the clubs to increase participation, which is far greater in the northern part of the district than in the southern part. This year the district has 29 inbound students and 24 outbound students. The high school participants go to another country for a year of study in their destination land.
| Steve brought with him Yuka Tameko from Japan, who answered questions about herself and her family. Foreign students compete for the spots, but our students need to be recruited. Children of Rotarians can participate. | ![]() |
| The committee needs: |
| 1. Students to go abroad |
| 2. Host families (need not be Rotarian) |
| 3. Host families (need not be Rotarian) |
| 4. Host clubs (S.R. West is one, with Gail Johnson hosting Rafaela from Brazil) |
If you are interested in participating in this rewarding activity, you can phone Steve (care of Caroline at 535-0944) or access the web site at www.youthexchange130.org.
