A Visit from "Glinda, the Good Witch"
 |
| President Michael Moore called the meeting to
order at 12:30 P. M. |
Pledge:
Jim Benoit (PP '87-88) led us in the flag salute located to the
President's right and to our left.
Moment:
The Rotary moment was brought to us by our PR & Marketing Chairman,
Judith Light. It was written in 1859 by Charles Dickens about the
French Revolution in 1789. I think it's worth repeating here.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the
age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief,
it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the
season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of
despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were
all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct to the other way - in
short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its
noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil,
in the superlative degree of comparison only."
Charles Dickens, opening line of A Tale of Two Cities

Gary Lucas, Co-chairman of the 20th Annual
CRAB FEED was our greeter. Some of our visiting Rotarians
included: PP Shauna Lorenzen, Dusty Muckinhaupt, Carl Campbell
(thank goodness I can spell this one), Steve Olsen and Joan
Gutri....I'm sorry I don't know this name plus more that I can't
remember. |
Welcome Rotarians!
| Before the meeting could continue PP Brian Herndon
had to receive his official Past President's pin from President
Mike Moore, who also stated at this time that PDG John
Withers was his newest best friend. What was that about? I
missed something. |
 |
 |
Our newest member, Jack Bill, insurance broker,
was introduced today as well. Good luck and welcome. We're thrilled
that you will be on the clean-up committee for the CRAB Feed on
January 25, 2003. |
Guests of Rotarians:
Bill Fisher introduced his guest, Dorsey N. Goldsby of
Lighthouse Marketing Solutions. Welcome Dorsey, and we hope that you find
our Club a fun and informative place to be.

| Deborah Noel, a guest and Chairperson of Barrier
Awareness Day, the Mayor's Committee for the employment of
person's with disabilities, asked for Rotary's assistance in

Chris Parr-Feldman, Chairman of the 20th Annual Crab
Feed reminded everyone about the crab meeting right after our
regular meeting. Then she blew it by making an illegal announcement.
I sincerely apologize to everyone for that
I got carried away and
couldn't stop. Please forgive me. |
| Janet Codding, Club Membership Chairman,
thanked all of those wonderful Rotarians who served on the committee
with her last year and thanked the newcomers who joined her
committee this year. Great job you guys!
There will be a membership meeting next Monday, Aug. 5th starting
at 5:00 pm. |

Scott Bartley announced the great Bartley
BBQ will take place on Sept. 7 at Ginny Pitt's Harvest Moon
Vineyards.
Be there, it's so much fun. |
President Mike announced that nominations for District
Governor are open. Interviews will be held on Sept. 28. If you have
someone in mind, please see him for the proper form.
FINES of the times:
Brian Fikes $10 for the removal of his red badge to blue.
Congratulations! We know that you joined in February and had to leave for
a short time to recover from an accident after driving your car into Bob
Marigo's neighborhood leaving him without lights. We're so happy that you
are okay and with us. Also, thank you for volunteering to be in charge of
the Clean-up Committee for the 20th Annual Crab Feed. (Maybe
Bob would like to help you J -Ed)
| Harry Rubins, Foundation Chairman was gone for
a while to exotic and far away places. Gibraltar to Tangiers by
boat, then to Grenada, London, the Atlantic Coast of Spain, which is
the best in his opinion. I can't wait to have that opportunity to
check it out myself.
He also stated that when the market is down, he wants to be out
of town. Harry graciously paid a $25 fine and $78 to Polio
Eradication. Thank you so kindly, Harry, the Foundation
appreciates it. |

RAFFLE
A chance for $675! And the lucky winner to choose the black marble was Ron
Street. Phooey! No luck today. Who got the wine? It seems as if Ray
Schofield and Bob Harris have both sets of each other's tix.
Okay, Tarina Hall, what are you doing with our raffle tix? Anyway,
it sounds like a good plan to make money. Collect the $$ and hand out both
sides of the tickets. Maybe we should mention this to Jim Benoit,
chairman of the raffle sales for the 20th Annual CRAB Feed.
(Past
President Bob Marigo and Kenny D enjoyed the meeting today, as did Paul
Schwartz but apparently the specifics
of their enjoyment here escaped the pen of our reporter. And
also rendered speechless today was Chuck Baker (probably just Chuck
getting yet another recognition award for his recent article in the PD
did
that escape everyone? J -Ed)
PROGRAM:
"Glinda - Wishes Come True" Presented by: Glinda the Witch.
Introduction by Harry Rubins.
We started off with Glinda removing her witch's cape and complaining that
her clothes had shrunk. She just had them cleaned and everything is now
smaller. I thought all witches knew they're not supposed wash their
clothes in water. Don't they melt or something?
Glinda the Witch had us go from table to table asking if we have or had
known anyone in our lives with cancer either now or in the past. It
shocked me that the majority of the room had either family or friends with
cancer. It was also nice to see so many cancer survivors.
Glinda the Witch was diagnosed with cancer four years ago. She promised
herself if she survived this illness, she would try to do something about
it. She did survive. She gave up her job and became Glinda the Witch who
grants wishes. For $5 you can buy a wish. It's amazing to her and her
wishers that these wishes have been known to come true. I believe it!
| (Why just today she granted Ron Street's wish
to become "The Real Tommy Banana" J -Ed) |
 |
As a reminder, here are "The Five Components of Successful Cancer
Recovery:
Support Network - utilize all possibilities and accept all help
offered
Medical Team - traditional and non-traditional
Attitude - conquering fear and eliminate negativity
Faith-based Healing - spiritual community support, power of prayer
for recovery
Goal setting - set realistic and challenging recovery goals and set
dates for success
Remember that survivor rates are increasing. We are all affected by
cancer, one way or another, just through the people we know. Be alert to
anything unusual going on in your body and don't be afraid to get yourself
checked out.
That's it for now. It was a pleasure to write the bulletin.
