January 20
"Sister Jane Kelly: Her Story"
Forget corporate whistle blowers. Sister Jane summoned undeniable courage to speak out against abuses, secrecy and cover- ups in her diocese. Following a lifetime of devotion to the Catholic Church and its teachings, she then faced accusations that she was undermining the church. A memorable and moving account you won't want to miss.

Sunshine:

Bob Marigo Bob Marigo reported that former Rotarian and Past President Bob Miller is home sick with pneumonia and lung cancer. No calls, please, but cards and email would be great.

President Mike then put out a request for a new club secretary as Fred will be retiring in June to pursue his "cash crops". Ginny Pitts asked if it was a paying job, and yes, it is.

Rotary District Assembly is slated for March 15th. All are welcome to attend in Ukiah. Our President is eagerly looking forward to a nice stay in Northern California.

Board meeting is slated for Tuesday, January 14th.

Recognition:

Ginny Pitts Ginny Pitts was called upon to answer why she rang the bells for the Salvation Army only 30 minutes when she signed up for an hour. She says she was having lunch with Doug, her guest today, and he made her late. $10 fine for lousy excuse.

Chuck Olson Chuck Olson also rang the bell for us. He only signed up for 30 minutes and had to ring it for 2 hours. $30 fine for lousy Rotarian and not signing up for an hour in the first place.

Chuck Stark Chuck Stark apparently went on another trip to see his relatives on the great plains...of Hawaii. Rumor has it his dad, Tony Stark had his bags packed to go for the trip and was never picked up. There was more talk of President Mike's mom involved...No fine.

Jeri Arnold Jeri Arnold has not been recognized all year and we found out she just bought a car for her 16-year-old daughter who doesn't even have her license yet. (She also rang the bell for an hour for us) She paid $25 for putting her daughter on the roads with the rest of us.

Terry Galazzo Terry Galazzo has also been quiet this year. Our Pres was trying to get something on her when Tarina Hall mentioned her trip to Italy. Terry went for a wedding and to a few "ritzy places" in some scenic spots around the country. $30 fine for traveling and having fun.

Bill Gittins Wedding Anniversaries

Bill Gittins celebrated his 36th wedding anniversary on the 1st of December. $5 fine.

Ginny Pitts - January 2nd 33 years another - $5 fine
Gary Bayless - December 27th 33 years - 5 bucks
Chuck Stark - 36 years-"4 more and I am on parole"- $5

Raffle:

Phil Talamantes
Marble: Phil Talamantes reached in and came up short. Wine: Scott Bartley got the ticket and donated the bottle to the crab feed. We didn't have a bottle because Ginny forgot the wine...another $5 for her.

Program:

Paul Stychno, Andy Skrypka and Robin Marrs
Paul Stychno and Robin Marrs gave us a presentation on their trip to the Kiev and Ukraine Diabetes Project. Their goal is to unite the 35 clubs in the Ukraine to help the project in detecting and helping children with the disease. Andy Skrypka then showed up to give a few words as she was the pioneer for the project.

The project was started 10 years ago and the Rotary clubs have helped over 1900 people and also funded a book printed in the local language. They are looking for sister clubs in the area to help with projects and funding, and a local replacement team from our district. They would like to eventually serve over 5000 kids in the country.

Robin then showed us a slide show of their trip. The buildings are in poor shape, the government is corrupt, and it is difficult to get supplies through. The rewarding feature is saving and improving the lives of many people in Ukraine, with our monies being a direct key.

They had a few days to relax in Paris on the return trip and looks like they had a good time and were serving as excellent ambassadors of the SR West Rotary Club.
