Sonoma County Update

President Brian Herndon President Brian rang the club's rotary bell to begin the meeting. This meeting started off with the President Elect Michael Moore leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Paula Wrenn Paula Wrenn gave the Rotary Moment (a quote form Nelson Mandela's inaugural speech),

and Susan Nowacki introduced the 5 visiting Rotarians.

Not only is he an expert in his field, long before heading Sonoma County's Water Agency, Randy Poole was aptly named by his parents for his career. Come learn more about area water needs, the Endangered Species Act and funding of our water resources.

Chris Rosell Chris Rosell got his metal bone braces removed (ouch!) and was fined $25.

 

Santa Rosa Mayor Mike Martini & President Brian Herndon
Hizzoner the Mayor received a $10,000 donation for "A Place to Play". Five Rotary clubs donated $100,000 over the last three years.

 

We got a big thank-you from the LBC and Raising a Reader.

 

Bill Dodson Janet didn't draw the marble but Bill Dodson got the wine.

 

Program:

Supervisor Tim Smith

Highlights:

  • Citizens voted 70% for General Plan but didn't vote the money to support it. Now the county will use bonds to pay for the plan. (Bonds will be repaid with future gas tax revenues from the State)
  • For the first time 9 cities in Sonoma Co. and all of Marin are agreeing on a strategy to solve the transportation problem
  • It will take CalTrans 6 years to do an environmental impact report for improving the Novato narrows
  • Rail - without a local sales tax or other subsidy there will be no rail
  • 101 to Steele Lane completion date is 2004
  • BART won't come to Santa Rosa.
  • Sonoma Co. has lowest outbound commute in Bay Area
  • Airport - talking with a couple airlines, travel to L.A., Seattle and Utah, etc. likely, but the airport is going through its own changes
