President Brian opened the meeting promptly at 12:30 p.m. to a standing room only crowd—only six meetings left in this Rotary year for President Brian and President Elect Mike Moore is eager to move from the back of the room to the front! Past President Rich Pratt led the Club in the pledge and Roger Olson inspired us with the need for goofy friends (from Andy Rooney) and the observation that age was like toilet paper (moving faster at the end than the beginning). It does make you want to check out Roger’s personal library.

President Elect-Elect Louis Capuano introduced the visiting Rotarians, all of who were from either the Santa Rosa Club or the Santa Rosa Sunrise club.
Our guests were named and greeted; particularly President Brian’s daughter, Alicia Cronbach, who works with domestic violence cases for the YWCA and Petaluma Police Department. Rotarian
Tux Tuxhorn from the Santa Rosa Sunrise Club flirted with a heavy fine by pitching his club’s golf tournament—out of order—which will take place on May 31, 2002. Tickets are available from any Santa Rosa Sunrise Clubmember.

Susan Nowacki gave a Sunshine report on new member, Brian Fikes, and Lisa Greenfield. Lisa is all right pending some word on her back surgery and Brian Fikes is very appreciative of the e-mails and communications he has received from all of the Rotarians. In his words, "you guys are great."

President Brian strongly urged everybody to take advantage of the beautiful Napa Valley and our District Conference—Honoring America’s Heroes—taking place May 16 through 19 - 2002 at Yountville. The District Conference committee still has sponsorships available for businesses to take advantage of police contact Michael Cramko at ph. 963-9034 or mchramko@softcom.net. for some publicity about your business at our District Conference.

Bob Zeni introduced our final three students of the month from Piner High School: Nakatza, Jennifer, and Enrique. Enrique shared with us that he plans a college career following the passions of his life. Nakatza is from the country of Eritrea and shared with the club that shortly after coming to America she passed from childhood to adulthood attending high school in this country – and now on her way to college.

President Brian announced that we now had a fresh supply of club flags to be used when traveling in other areas and countries. A long time tradition of Rotary has been the exchange of a Rotarian’s banners when visiting another club away from your home district.

President Brian then called on Terry Galazzo for a report on Rebuilding Together.

Terry thanked Rotarians President Brian, Past District Governor Mike Merrill, Mike Arendt (and his spouse), Chuck Olson (plus his brother), Harry Rubins, and Chuck Baker for their hands-on participation in that event.

Altogether, there were 235 volunteers involved, houses in 9 locations were repaired and renovated, and some 85 trees planted throughout the day. Once again, great success for a project sponsored in part by Santa Rosa West Rotary Club.

Gail Johnson announced that the Group Study Exchange from Japan had arrived last week and has been visiting in the Petaluma area and is currently in Sonoma. Gail reminded the Club that there is a camp out and barbeque on May 10 and 11 - 2002 with the GSE team. Please contact Gayle for details at 538-5669. Gayle also reminded the club that the whole GSE team will be speaking to the club on May 13, 2002.

Recognitions

Gail was then recognized, together with Carlos Vallejos and Lori Burmeyer for getting older in their marriages—Happy Anniversary!

Dave Wattell paid money for losing his badge, having a full cellar and not being down on his luck even though he was between jobs.

Paul Stychno reached in his pocket for travels to Ohio and Florida--thrice. He also paid for advertising his "paintings on display at Sawyers in downtown Santa Rosa."

President Brian congratulated new members, Gary Bayless, Terena Hall and Joel Burdick on moving from red badge to blue badge. Welcome to the right color code Rotarians.

Foundation Chair Harry Rubins announced that the club had reached $193.00 per capita in foundation giving for this year. Go team. This was increased by an additional $200.00 when Chuck Stark auctioned a book on Rotary wisdom that was purchased by Ron Street for $100.00 and matched by the club. Do you need that wisdom Ron? Chuck also reminded everybody that they needed to prepare for a "wet event" in June when we "debunk" President Brian.

The Marble

Chuck Olson "missed the marble" and Scott Bartley sent the wine back to the club to be used for next year’s crab feed.

Program: Classic Motor Sport Racing

Program chair Paula Wrenn introduced photojournalist Steve Synder who presented a program on classic motor sport races.

Steve presented a very interesting program showing classic race cars at the Concourse de Italiano in Pebble Beach, together with shots of races in Laguna Seca, Sears Point, and Monico.

Some of the cars displayed were worth three to four million dollars apiece and a local resident near the Lakeville Highway area has a collection of vehicles valued at over one hundred million dollars.

Steve indicated that we should feel quite lucky that we are within 175 miles of both Sears Point and Laguna Seca were these vehicles frequently "take to the track."

It was noted—perhaps for future recognition—that Gary Bayless had an extensive connection with this very expensive sport. Steve encouraged everybody to travel to Monaco for that event, but to wear sunscreen and always use earplugs.

Meeting adjourned promptly at 1:30 p.m.
