PROGRAM

Elizabeth Galvez Elizabeth Galvez, M.A. Assistant Director of the Teacher Diversity Program (TAP) at Sonoma State told us there is a need for 300,000 need for teachers. The innovative program focuses on the Community College student, and offers the students university credits, a stipend, and an early introduction into what its like to be a teacher. This, with the hope of broadening the pool of prospective teachers by reaching out to the student before they make up their mind about careers. Typically about 60 students enroll in the program each semester.

The student enrolls in a highly structured three-unit education course per semester at the university that provides an overview of teaching challenges and the realities of today's classroom. They observe and participate in a school classroom for 30 hours, write research papers and assemble a portfolio of their experience and discovery. The program truly offers the prospective teacher direct insight into the teaching profession. Mrs. Galvez reported that 80% of the participating students become career teachers.
