Bulletin GSE "Team India" VisitTHE APRIL "REIGN" INTERIM KING BOBQueen Patsy delegated this months presiding duties to Past President Bob Marigo, but kept a watchful eye on the podium (and her scepter and hook ready just in case) as the interim "king" gaveled the raucous crowd to "organized disorder". Other past presidents Phil Talamantes and Jim Valinoti led us in the pledge and inspiring Rotary Moment (Jim whats inspiring about the IRS?).
VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS Paula Wrenn introduced 10 visiting Rotarians, including several from the Downtown Club. Paula also introduced her guest, Bobbi Morgan, a web consultant who will be publishing our bulletin. ANNOUNCEMENTS Caroline Fox has done a great job with editing and publishing the weekly bulletin, but has moved on so she can spend more time in her business and pursue other Rotary Avenues of Service good luck Caroline! Jim Valinoti has volunteered for an additional assignment, and stepped up to the plate as interim editor. Another change is the Treasurers spot. Ray Mattison will assume the duties of Acting Treasurer. He will fill in for Treasurer Tom Tessier who has done a great job in restructuring the budgeting, tracking and reporting system. Tom will remain as an active member of the club, but has a "full plate" with tax season and expansion of his business as a result of acquiring another practice. Chris Parr reminded us about the GSE team-India reception on April 9th, 5-7:30 p.m. at D.G Mike Merrills home. President-elect Chuck Stark announced the next Board Meeting on Tuesday April 11th at 11:45 a.m. at Josefs restaurant. He also announced that on May 4-5 a 2 day emergency services program, entitled "Every 15 Minutes" will occur at Piner H.S. The "Every 15 Minutes" program is put on by the Highway Patrol, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, and the local fire and police departments, in conjunction with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and the Office of Traffic Safety. Piner High School is taking a proactive step in educating local high school students about making mature decisions when alcoholic beverages are involved. The program's name was conceived in 1990 when one alcohol-related fatality occurred in the United States every fifteen minutes. The "Every 15 Minutes" program challenges high school students to think about drinking, driving, personal safety and the responsibility of making mature decisions when alcohol is involved. The program is designed to be emotional, in order to have the greatest impact. Rotary is a sponsor, having budgeted $10,000 each year for this event. Harry Rubins mentioned that since it's inception the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa West has contributed over $260,000 to the Paul Harris fund great job! Jeff Ray reminded everyone about signing up for the golf tourney on May 4th. Richard Pratt announced that May 1st would be "dark" because of the District Conference May 4-8. Any member participating in the conference will get credit for May 1st, or will need to do a make up. A schedule for the conference was distributed. Bill Fisher announced that a few reservations are available for the District Conference dinner on Friday evening May 5th. John Withers said the 35th anniversary luncheon would be held at Los Robles on May 22nd at noon, our regular meeting time. The guest speaker, a long time friend of John's will be Past Rotary International Director Paul Sandas. The Lakeport club will host its 75th anniversary celebration on Saturday May 13th. RECOGNITION
Ken Kushnir was nailed for $50 something about needing Prozac for his recent marriage and annulment. Scott Bartley was recognized to the tune of $20 for his new Mercedes. (Chrysler) Jim Hinton, Pete Lamonica, John Hathaway and Ken Prouty coughed up $10 each for their one-week ski trip to Mirabel, France. Poor Guys J John Withers forked over $10 for his sons remodeling job and something about a pick-up truck parked at his house. Missed quiz questions cost Terry Evans and Don Ling $10 each. Is this our treat from King Bob for the rest of April? He promises more pop quizzes so read your Rotarian magazine. During the recent Inner Wheel slumber party at Faye Talamantes cabin in Lakeport, Jim Valinoti, Bill Gittins shared pizza at Bob Harris house. "Helpless in the kitchen Bob" had to call his wife Sandy at the party for help in locating their pizza pan. Bill and Jim enjoyed watching Bob have to grovel at Sandy's response when he called. Can you imagine that? Not knowing where the pizza pan is in your own kitchen? That should be worth a big fine for "Mr. Pure rocket science". RAFFLE Ron Allen has been a big spender at the raffle. With todays $140 worth of tickets, he finally won the big pot - $1,140, and recouped some of his prior raffle purchases and fines. Let's see now $5 into $140 = 28 & 28 x 9 tickets (for each $5) = 252 tickets. I guess that 252 tickets last in the bowl will very likely produce the 1st winning ticket coming out of the bowl! Way to go Ron!!! Neil Silverman donated his $25 to the Community Fund.
PROGRAM Janet Codding, dressed appropriately and respectfully in a sari and a big red symbolic dot on her forehead, introduced the GSE "Team India" from District 2980. This is the first trip to the U.S. for the five team members, three men and two women, who are staying with several host families from our club. These are bright, well educated, and outgoing people who are trying very hard to promote international goodwill in the Rotary tradition, while dealing with "culture shock". This was the first group presentation in a strange land. Although the program needs some "fine tuning", all team members had the opportunity to speak about their particular fields of expertise. Another team from India visited the U.S. in 1991-92. Team India District 2980 leader, Dawan V. Namasivay Madathil, discussed the complex organization of the district and the various states. He was president of his home club in 1991-92. He mentioned the goals of Polio eradication and his clubs role in providing free eye care in rural areas. Mr. M. Krishna, a certified accountant, gave a lengthy presentation about the positive changes occurring in the regional economy, the cultural and ethnic diversity of the people, and a few comments about some of the political issues. Mrs. Archana Manojkumar is a computer expert who briefly discussed the vision of a new Cyber society and the impact of the Internet in the global economy. Mrs. Malabika Deo is a Professor of Commerce. She gave an overview of the fellowship between the America and India, cultural bonding and education advancement. There are 58 recognized languages, and about 3,100 language "groups". Hindi is the national language, but English is widely spoken. She discussed the field of medicine and natural products. Mr. D. Lawrence Sagayaraj is a hotel general manager. He is learning about the hospitality industry in America, and briefly discussed trends in his business.
The program ended with a cultural dance presentation by GSE team members Malabika and Archana. Beside himself with excitement, this delighted Past President Bob Marigo to no end.
