PRESIDENT PATSY BARNES PRESIDED . . .

With a superintendent spin and bureaucratic flair, Patsy Barnes was in control and had a firm grip on the club by starting the meeting at 12:15 p.m.  She was the SR West Club's first female member, and now its first female president!  Promptly, she acknowledged Bob Marigo for keeping things in the club on track, and says that she will keep Marigo in check.  Truly, though, Pat said that the main reason for starting at 12:15 is to address two members:  Rich Pratt and Neil Silverman.  Unfortunately, both were out-of-town.

Not once, but twice, she stressed that the board members should attend the next Board Meeting, which will be held the on the following day, July 13th at Josef's Restaurant.  She encouraged attendees to arrive at 11:45 sharp.  And, once you're there, you can't leave.  Well . . . at least until the meeting was adjourned.

Many thanks to our volunteersMark Decker (Greeter), Ray Mattison (Ticket Sales), Scott Bartley (Pledge), and Bob Zeni (Rotary Moment).  Service above self, indeed!

Guests of club members, Tom Tessier and Roger Olson, were Julie Scherer and Craig Murphy, respectively.  Also, with us was our guest speaker's wife, Nancy Jenks.

RAFFLE

Oh, my!  We were caught off guard when Pat did the raffle early.  But, despite the scurry to pay attention to tickets, a non-SR West member having the chance to pick the precious marble, and someone winning the prize money . . . we all made it through it JUST FINE!

Pat is certainly setting a different tone this year and showing who's in charge.

A SPECIAL BANNER PRESENTATION

Lou Delsol, District 5130's Past District Governor, presented the SR Rotary West club with a banner and declared the club as the new District Governor's home club.

Banner Presentation

Three new badges will be added to the banner for Larry Bello, Lou Delsol, and current District Governor Mike Merrill.

ROTARY BIZ

"Joe, do you know where your son is?"

A perfectly good question to a parent, don't you think?  Joe PerezPat pointed out that Joe Perez (right) missed a very important event--King Richard's Debunking--due to a critical mission . . . to get his son, Alex, on a plane en route to Denmark.  Alex is participating in the Youth Exchange Program and will be away from his family for sometime.  Enjoy yourself there, Alex, and learn, learn, learn!

Almost Down to the Wire

YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!  August 15th is fast approaching and your services are desperately needed, fellow Rotarians. Ken ProutyKen Prouty (left) is urging us to step forward to host our inbound Chilean student from August 15th through Thanksgiving.  There are some potential offers.  Thus far, however, there had been only one club member to step up to the plate (BIG THANKS to Janet!).  Along with Joe Perez, Ken had visited and encouraged other members in other clubs to provide their homes and assistance.  DO REMEMBER:  Non-Rotarians are most certainly welcome to become hosts!

A weekend for two at the Inn at the Bay in Bodega.  This excellent package includes dinner, golf, and breakfast.

Chris (below):

Ticket sales for the Crab Feed begins on September 1st, with a target sellout date of end of October.  Corporate tables for 8 to 10 people will be available.  The committee needs your help in getting  complete weekend packages @ Carmel, Monterey, Lake Tahoe, Palm Springs, and other places (2-3 days length stay).

This is the wine country, so solicitation for these fine bevy will begin soon. A master fund raising event letter for all solicitations for donations/auctions will be printed on Rotary letterhead.  A list will be available detailing how the proceeds from the feed will be used throughout the year.

Let's help the committee not just meet . . . but EXCEED its goal of $40K by getting items donated for the raffle and auction.

IN LOVING MEMORY . . .

At the meeting, Bob Harris collected over $750  in donations in remembrance for three individuals dear to the club:  Bob Lucas, Barbara Rubins (wife of member Harry Rubins), and Iris Giacometti (wife of member Lou Giacometti ).  All passed away due to cancer, and will be faithfully missed.  The club's donation will benefit the American Cancer Society.  Thank you to all those who reached out.

RECOGNITION

The July birthday celebrants recognized at the meeting included (not all inclusive) Past President King Richard (below)  King Richard(who also celebrated jointly with 18 year old son, Justin, amidst very loud heavy metal and Weird Al Yankovich music.  The King returned the favor by playing his generation's music, like the WHO); Paul Schwartz; Fred; and Nancy Jenks (wife of special guest speaker, Shepherd Martin Jenks).  Wait a minute, wait a minute!  Alas, another fella got up to be recognized (once it dawned on him which month of the year he was born).  It was no other than Paul Stychno.  Happy birthday all!

O-oh!  Pete exclaimed that Duncan went to Mexico for a vacation and should be darned fined.  After careful thought, Duncan volunteered to fine himself a whopping $10.00.  Imagine the reaction from the crowd!

Our congratulations went out to Ken and Marty Prouty on their 47th wedding anniversary.

SHEPHERD MARTIN JENKS - Special Guest Speaker

The eloquent introduction was finely done by Phil TalamantesPhil TalamantesHe shared with us a clear distinction between our guest and himself.  In 1958, guest speaker Shepherd Martin Jenks was selected by the National Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of the 10 Outstanding Young Men of 1958.  In the same year, Phil was considered one of the 10 "Least Outstanding" Young Men.  Did I hear someone blurt out, "Some things never change!"?

Shepherd is a retired Navy captain and an ordained minister.  Shepherd was born in Berkeley, CA and was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Shepherd Martin JenksDuring his Navy career, he specialized in submarines.  Before retiring, he commanded two nuclear submarines and a nuclear submarine support tender.  He is best known as having been the navigator of the USS NAUTILUS when she became the first ship ever to reach the North Pole.

After retirement from the Navy, Shepherd was ordained as a clergyman in the Episcopal Church.  He and his wife, Nancy , currently live in Sebastopol, have 6 adult children and own an Electronic Commerce business.

A very informative documentary video of the voyage to the North Pole was enjoyed by all and, thereafter, the questions were abound!

ANNOUNCEMENT

This week's bulletin was brought to you by Caroline Fox, Emergency Stand-By Bulletin Writer (unofficial, of course) AND Assistant Bulletin Editor (for real!).

A special thanks (I think . . .) goes to Jim Hinton for passing on the baton to me this week, giving me my first stab on bulletin writing.  Hmmm, shouldn't Patsy fine him for that?  I heard through the grapevines that Pat Sizemore thanked King Richard twice for his escape from writing the bulletin this week.  Should I really be thanking him, and not Jim?  I'll do my best to get the team well-informed and on track.  PAT, YOU'RE UP NEXT WEEK!
