INT’L YOUTH EXCHANGE DAY – Sept. 28, 1998

Wake-up call!

Janet Codding and Terry Evans motivated us with the pledge and Rotary Moment. Tom (who?) Skinner introduced 19 Visiting Rotarians, who were looking forward to a chance at the $1,240 raffle.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Volunteer Speakers – High Schools

Ken Danzie, with translation by Ron Street, asked for volunteers to sign up for 15-20 minutes on any vocational topic in keeping with the Youth theme topic.

King Richard the Story Teller

This week's selection was the story of a little boy who goes to one school which is easily accessible and is taught to conform and abandon his own creativity.  He moves and goes to a much larger school where his classroom is much less accessible and he is taught that his own creativity is essential to his learning process.

Laurie Burmeyer reminded everyone to get those last minute tickets to her or Mark Decker. The drawing will have been held at SR Golf and Country Club by the time this bulletin is issued. Hats off to Ginny Pitts (left) who sold 25 so far, and all the others who hit 10+.

Sebastopol Club Pitches in to Help Hurricane Victims

Sebastopol club needs $$$ donations for Red Cross assistance to hurricane victims. See notice on the District site.

RECOGNITION

Past President Jim Valinoti and past DG John Withers had a bet that the attendance records for our group had never been as high as they are presently.   Jim admitted that he had been proven wrong and both were nailed for $25 based on an article in an Oct. 1983 bulletin about high attendance records.

92898_2.JPG (8670 bytes)Elusive Tom Skinner tried to redeem himself by paying a $40 fine for participating in a Ukiah club sponsored triathlon event. He dragged in "witness" Mike Merrill (right) who also paid $25 for his participation in the same event.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS …

October 16 – Golf tournament, contact Jeff Ray; OK to attend dinner only – need 7 more to break even.

RAFFLE $1,240 with 14 Marbles Left

A visitor barely missed striking it rich. Laurie Burmeyer won $40 - $30 got her a raffle ticket, and $10 went back to the "fund".

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE by Teri Evans

Our goal is to bring in 2 new members per month. There are 5 teams formed with the team leaders being Bill Fisher, Ginny Pitts, Phil Talamantes, Steve Kay and myself. Each team consists of about 20 members which include all club members.

An ongoing report will be given on which teams have brought in new members.

We will be looking for new members who will bring a range of personal and professional resources and knowledge that will strengthen our club’s ability to serve throughout the community.

West Santa Rosa Rotary has a long, very distinguished history of community service. An ongoing membership base is key to continuing this legacy.

PROGRAM

Dr. Harry Johnson of the Arcata club, past DG and current Youth Exchange Chairman, gave on overview of the international scholarship and exchange program involving high school students. About 21 out of 41 clubs are active in 15 countries. Each club needs to budget about $2,000 to get this started. The program involves recruiting outbound students and host families for inbound students, assigning counselors and making detailed arrangements. He described examples of team building, teaching of Rotary principles, and strict rules that must be followed. He introduced two visiting students who gave presentations about their impressions of the program and some insights into their home countries. Fausto Russi from Ciudad de Carmen in SE Mexico is attending school in Fortuna where he is playing soccer. He did his homework before the trip by researching his host "city" on the Internet. Amalia Martinez from Cochabamba in Bolivia traveled all the way to Trinidad (Calif., not the island nation). She described the cultural differences and other observations. Overall, this was a very inspiring program.

FUN, FELLOWSHIP, SERVICE: "FESTIVAL OF BROTHERHOOD," FEB., 1999

What could be more rewarding than a service project that you know will help people who really need help? A service project that combines good Rotary with good fun and the spring-like sunshine of old Mexico. The third "Festival of Brotherhood," a district-to-district and club-to-club world community service activity, will take place in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta Feb. 12-20, 1999. Four days in the Colonial beauty of Guadalajara and four days at the premier Krystal Vallarta combined with international Rotary fellowship and outrageous fun make for a package that will leave you fulfilled and proud of what you and Rotary do together. The entire package, including air transportation, hotel, cocktail welcome parties, taxes, and transfers is only $895 per person, double occupancy. Isn't it time you got involved in the international work of our organization? For more information and reservation forms by mail or fax, call Larry Kavanaugh at (707) 585-28604 or Sid Berlin at (707) 942-6566. Join us for this adventure in service. You need to act soon to reserve your seat on Mexicana and your hotel space. Thank you.

Presidential Update Report  (by Jim Valinoti)

The 1999-00 Presidential Nomination Committee has had its first official meeting to discuss potential candidates for the office of President Elect.  The committee is made up of the 5 immediate Past Presidents, with the most immediate one being the Chair.

The current bylaws call for the "presiding officer" (King Richard) to "ask for nominations by members from the club for president elect".   Such nominations "may be presented by the nominating committee or by members from the floor, by either or by both".

As such, below is a list of  "qualifications" for club president, as provided to us in the Rotary Manual of Procedure.  This list will be printed in the bulletin for one more week to remind  members of the club that if  they wish to submit the names of persons for potential nomination, the nominatees should meet the following requirements:

Qualifications

The Club President:

  1. must be a member (other than honorary) in good standing of the club, whose classification (if an active or additional active member) is of unquestioned integrity;
  2. should possess the ability to assume the leadership of the club and possess the esteem and confidence of the fellow members;
  3. shall attend the district presidents-elect training seminar and the district assembly and should be prepared to give the time and effort necessary to lead and carry on the work of the club.  If for good reason attendance at the assembly or presidents-elect training seminar is not possible, and is excused by the incoming governor a designated representative from the club shall attend and report back to the incoming president (SRCC, VIII, 4);
  4. should have served in the club as a board member, or member of one or more of the major committees;
  5. should have attended one or more district conferences;
  6. should have a working knowledge of the constitution and bylaws of the club, and the Object of Rotary. (Attendance at at least one international convention before assuming office is also desirable)

For those members who are interested in knowing what the duties of a president are, please contact Jim Valinoti and I will make that information available to you in written form by fax, email or hard copy.
