Up, Up and Away...

Where Am I Again?

After a momentary lapse in which King Richard forgot where he was, he got the meeting rolling in his prompt usual fashion. Harry Rubins led us in the pledge. King Richard, standing in for Ed Rich, gave us our thought for the day, a short prayer for Lou Del Sol who is in the hospital with heart trouble. Robin Marrs introduced visiting Rotarians for us. As usual, the Downtown contingent was significant.

Announcements

REMEMBER! Bylaws Assembly, Next Week.

August 31, 1998:  As far as other groups are concerned, our group will be dark. Also, the proposed start time for the meeting will be 12:15 p.m.. These adjustments are for the purpose of making as much time for discussion as possible. Click here to read proposed changes.

Dream Vacation Raffle update --

Rick Rybicki announced that so far we have sold $7000 or so in our "Win a Dream Vacation" raffle. Rick warned us of the evils of waiting until the last minute to sell any tickets, then admitted, to his shame, that he himself had fallen into this trap.

Golf Tournament

Jeff Ray wants all golfers at the 3rd Annual Rotary Golf Tourney and BBQ on October 16th at 2:00 p.m. at Oakmont East Course. For more information please contact Jeff  585-0206 for this fun event.

Fireside September

Remember the Pacific Coast Air Museum fireside chat with Roger Olson on September 9th from 5:30-7:00pm. Contact Roger for more info.

Kid Street Open House

Janet Codding announced that Kid Street Theater was having an open house on August 25, 1998, Tuesday from 1:00-3:00 p.m..

Ice Show Tickets

Jeff Ray announced that the entire block of tickets for the Snoopy Ice Show had been sold or spoken for. He had contacted the rink and there were some tickets still available for the same show in the next section over for $16 a piece. The catch is Jeff needs to know yesterday and needed the money this morning. For anyone still wanting tickets call Jeff now at 585-0206. The show is on December 11 at 7:30 p.m..

Windsor Salsa Festival

Sue Nelson, the past President of the Windsor group, announced that there would be a salsa festival sponsored by the Windsor group on September, 27. Call Sue or any other member of the Windsor group for more details.

A Fit of Conscience

David Bjorklund announced that, due to technical difficulties, last week's bulletin would be delayed in coming out. Ginny Pitts, battered by a relentless conscience, admitted she was the source of said technical difficulties. Murmurings were heard throughout the group that, given this sort of conduct, it was not likely that Mr. Bjorklund was really an attorney after all.

Janet Codding and Joe Montana

Dennis Wilkinson donated tickets to The Quarterback Shoot-out Celebrity Golf Tournament. Janet Codding won a heated bidding war to capture the prize for $45. Thanks Dennis.

82498_1.jpg (18020 bytes)Holland kids home and happy

The kids, who recently went to Holland on the exchange program (John Stychno, David Stychno, Alex Perez, Jessica Lucas and Greg Lucas) gave us a report on the great times they had overseas. They learned a bunch, ate good food, broadened their horizons, did a lot of bicycling, saw museums, observed strange European relaxation rituals as well as fantastic architecture. The one thing they all shared was a deep sense of gratitude to Pete and Aat Hoogland. That gratitude is shared by us all.

General Recognition (a.k.a.: fines!)

82498_3.jpg (17427 bytes)Paul Stychno (right), while he spent three weeks all over Europe, he missed Independence Day in the Ukraine: $40.00.

Bill Imboden, while he investigated nearly every nook and cranny of Italy, he could not find any Rotary meetings: $40.00.

Michael Moore, while he was admiring the scaffolding outside the Vatican, he was hit by a pigeon bomb: $50.00.

Ginny Pitts celebrated her birthday this last weekend by wallpapering her nephew's bedroom in Sacramento. Rather than being fined, she was treated to a rousing chorus of happy birthday from her beloved Santa Rosa West Rotary. Rumor has it next time she would prefer the fine. Happy birthday Ginny!

Mullins & Moore

Duncan Holt went to Mexico and got a 90 pound whoopee. He left the whoopee in Mexico to go meet his wife in France. His discretion was rewarded as he won $1,000 in Monte Carlo. He and Mike Moore formulated a Catholic scaffolding conspiracy theory which has apparently enveloped Europe. Duncan got home just in time for his own birthday: $100 toward a Paul Harris.

Raffle

Joe Perez pulled the tickets Gary got to pick for the orange ($1,160 in the pot with only 18 marbles in the bag) but walked away blue and a little green with envy for Marv Hyman who won the $20 prize and contributed it back to the group. Thanks Marv.

Janet Codding drew for $25 and donated to Rotary Foundation. Thanks Janet.

Internal Service Team Recognition

Thanks to: Harry Rubins who led us in the pledge; King Richard, who gave us our thought for the day, and Robin Marrs who introduced visiting Rotarians

Program: Pacific Coast Air Museum Open House

82498_4.jpg (15073 bytes)This was the ninth year that the Pacific Coast Air Museum has put on their annual open house and air show. Nine years ago it was just a couple hundred people who like to get together and see each other's air planes. This last weekend approximately 11,050 people attended the open house and air show. A significant portion of our group was in attendance.

Joe Perez and Roger Olson gave us a recap of the weekend and suggested that we would do well to sponsor an event for the next air show, such as the Friday evening dance.

The main attractions this year were Amelia Reed, a 73 year old air show pilot who has been flying since she was 15 years old. And Delmar Benjamin, who built, shows and exhibits a replica of the 1932 racer which set the air speed record of the time.

Over the last six weeks prior to the open house several contributors came through including Bank of America and Charles Schultz to help make the open house a success. Donations went primarily to pay for fuel for the aircraft in the air show.

Roger' s wife contacted many of the local restaurants, wineries and delis to put on quite a spread in the VIP tent.

By a strange coincidence, all of the copies of "Top Gun" were sold out at the local video stores.

Bottom-line: if you didn't make it this year, get out there next year. It was a really good time, and remember, you do not need to be a pilot to be a member of the Pacific Coast Air Museum. On the web at www.pacificcoastairmuseum.org.

FYI:

Jim Valinoti recently received the following letter from Larry Bello:

August 12, 1998

Dear Jim,

I want to thank you for your support and dedication in helping get a Web page set up for the district during my year as District Governor. Due to your efforts, and those of Bob Harris and Bo Simon, you made information about our district available on the Internet. I truly appreciate what you folks did because I firmly believe the time has come for Rotary at the district and club level to start using today's technology to communicate with each other.

I also want to thank your club's Board of Directors who allowed you to put the money up front to pay for the work on the Web page. As I indicated to you when we started down this road, I would try to reimburse you when I understood the financial situation of our district at the end of my year. I am pleased to inform you that we are ending the year in good financial condition, and as a result, I am able to reimburse your club for the entire cost incurred in setting up and maintaining the District Web page. Enclosed is a check in the amount of $2,604.00 to cover that cost.

Please convey my thanks and appreciation to your club's Board of Directors for their fine support of the district during my year as Governor. Also convey my thanks and appreciation to Bob Harris and Bo Simon for their time, efforts, and patience in setting up the Web page.

Lawrence P. Bello District Governor 1997-98 District 5130
