Paul Harris Fellowships Presented

81798_4.jpg (17655 bytes)Harry Rubins had the pleasure to introduce ex-Governor John Strong who in turn announced the following Paul Harris fellows: Bill Wilber to honor his two sons, Jim Benoit honoring his wife Lynn, Arnie Carston to honor his son Scott, and Pete Lamonica to honor his wife Exine. Thank you Bill, Jim, Arnie and Pete for your generous gift to the Paul Harris Foundation. The Paul Harris Foundation operates in more than 18 countries doing wonderful deeds such as installing sanitary supply systems in third world countries. They also have given out more than $151,000 worth of grants. It is with pride and affection that we give Dennis Crandall a plaque to honor him for all his devotion and hard work that he has consistently given to our club over the past years. As you all remember Dennis has chaired our big fund raiser, the Crab Feed the last several years. His organizational skills kept most of us on track working under him. Congratulations Dennis!

Ice show tickets

Jeff Ray has been able to arrange for a block of 40 tickets to the Snoopy Ice Show on Friday, December 11, 1998 at 7:00 p.m.. Ticket prices are $20 per ticket and only the 40 tickets are available. For all those interested contact Jeff at 585-0206, and hurrry!

General Recognition (a.k.a.: fines!)

Mike Mullins came back from a wonderful vacation to Ireland with a different idea of history. His family stayed with a nice Irish family (naturally!) and after traveling through Northern Ireland he has become spiritually enlightened. He has talked to many people and seen for himself the problems that Ireland has. Fine was $30.

Paul Schwartz was innocently vacationing with his family in beautiful Lake Tahoe when he saw a D&S Awards truck in Harrah’s parking lot. Since he heard no bells and whistles in the casino he assumed Dennis didn’t win. Paul did have a great time with his family that only cost him $25.

81798_1.jpg (9644 bytes)Bob Reinking and Bob Miller (left) were discovered lurking around Hall Rd. wearing Hawaiian attire. In his defense the only utterance made by Bob Miller was "Fisher is a fink"! We have no idea what that means but Bob said it was a "cultural thing". Fine was $25 each.

John Withers just returned from an unusual vacation to London, Norway, North Shetland Island and down to Greenland. It seems to John there was just too much snow and ice. His remarks, however regarding Norway were quite interesting. Evidently the urinals were too high on the wall for John so he had to stand on his little tippy toes. Now John, confess. That wasn’t the sink, was it???????

Raffle

Since we have over $1,000 in the big pot just not anyone could draw the BIG marble so we were lucky to have Marv Hyman draw, but alas, no orange one for him. He announced if he had won all the money would have been donated back to the club. Let’s hope Marv is lucky again next week!

Janet Codding drew for $25 and donated to Rotary Foundation. Thanks Janet.

Internal Service Team Recognition

Thanks to all of you who helped set up and take down.

Program

Program chairman Marc Matson introduced Mike Ferguson, senior active with the Sebastopol Club and Sandy Wislicenus from District 1910. They have just returned with the Rotary Group Study Exchange to Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia. The group study exchange started in 1965. There are now 35,000 people participating worldwide from 100 countries. Our ambassadors for world peace were representing District 5130.

They had a wonderful colorful slide show with pictures of many friends and fellow Rotarians they have met and had a great fellowship. They visited castles, small quaint villages where they were warmly welcomed. Meeting with many burgemeisters and mayors was lots of fun, especially tasting local beers.

Besides all the fun, their group learned many things about how different Rotary clubs work and also talking about the various businesses and what people do for a living. They learned that almost all clubs meet in the evening and that there are no women in their clubs. Attendance is small; approximately 25 to 30 men.

The group attended a concert hall in Vienna, played chopsticks on Beethoven’s piano at the Beethoven Museum and later gathered for a champagne reception.

They especially liked Hungary. Their social services and hospital equipment were state of the art. In fact a Hungarian policeman tore the patch off his uniform to present to one of their members!

All in all a wonderful trip. Thank you to Mike and Sandy for sharing their great ideas and adventures.

Discussion re: Bylaws

An assembly to discuss the proposed bylaws changes has been set for August 31, 1998. As far as other groups are concerned, our group will be dark that week. Also, the proposed start time for that meeting will be 12:15 p.m.. These adjustments are for the purpose of accommodating as much time for discussion as possible.
