SAVE THE SONOMA COAST!

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: DUE TO TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES BEYOND OUR CONTROL (AN ACT OF GOD HAS PARALYZED OUR CAMERA) THE BULLETIN REGRETS THAT WE ARE UNABLE TO PROVIDE PICTURES THIS WEEK FOR OUR MORE VISUAL READERS.

King Richard got us off to a start in a huff. Trying to make sure that we had enough time to discuss the proposed by-laws changes at the end of the meeting, he got right down to business.

Terri Evans introduced nearly a third of the downtown club as visiting Rotarians. Pete Lamonica, Jim Valinoti (standing in for Ron Street) and Ginny Pitts each had guests to introduce.

Announcements

Dream Vacation Raffle update --

Michael Moore, Arnie Carston and Anne Abrams were each recognized for having sold their first 10 raffle tickets and thereby receiving the coveted golf shirt or sweater. In order to assist us in visualizing our goals techno-god Rick Rybicki prepared a thermometer chart showing us where he thinks we all ought to go.  Hint: its a lot hotter than here.

King Richard commended an absent Ron Street for a wonderful job on last week's bulletin (verily).

Remember, the Pacific Coast Air Museum will be putting on the 1998 Air Show on August 22nd and 23rd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sonoma County Airport. Call 575-7900 for more info. Or on the World Wide Web, go to http://metro.net/pcam/.

At the next meeting on the 17th, the  Paul Harris Awards will be presented by John Strong from Petaluma.

Roger Olson is planning a fireside social at the Pacific Coast Air Museum on September 9, 1998 from 5:30-7:15.  Its going to be a good time, come on down.

Jeff Ray is putting together a non-fundraising golf tournament and BBQ on October 16, 1998. Golf from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and BBQ after that.

Come on down! We're just given 'em away! (Well, almost)

Michael Moore, for the third straight week, came with something to raffle. If this keeps up, there are those who have suggested a potential name change for the group; "Mike Moore's Raffle Rumble," and "Mike's Rafflemania" so far have received the most votes. This week it was 10 tickets to the Transamerica Senior Golf Tournament at Silverado on October 5-11, 1998, plus two passes to the sky box and hospitality suite. After much grief and a small bidding war Dave Wattell came out the victor for the low, low price of just $400.

Ice show tickets available

Jeff Ray has been able to arrange for a block of 40 tickets to the Snoopy Ice Show on Friday, December 11, 1998 at 7:00 p.m.. Ticket prices are $20 per ticket and only the 40 tickets are available. For all those interested contact Jeff at 585-0206.

General Recognition (a.k.a.: fines!)

In our haste to belt it out over the bylaws we let several worthy candidates slide by without proper recognition.  You know who you are and so do we.

Raffle

Down to 20 marbles, up to $1,100. Doug Dilley from the Downtown Club again won the right to pick for the prize but in the end he was blue. There were some rumblings about not letting Mr. Dilley purchase any more raffle tickets as he has come to our meeting twice in the last four weeks and has won right to pick for the marble both times. Bob Miller won the booby prize and after a short deliberation as to whether or not to add it to his pension, decided to contribute it to the community fund.

Internal Service Team Recognition

Thanks to Dale Sipe for setting up, Teri Evans for greeting visiting Rotarians; to Ed Rich for selling raffle tickets, Lori Burmeyer for leading us in the pledge to Chuck Baker for his inspirational moment and to David Bjorklund for writing this bulletin.

Program

In the absence of Mark Matson, Janet Codding was given the honor of introducing our guest speaker for this week, Dr. Marty Griffin. Dr. Griffin moved to Marin County in the 1940s and immediately noticed two things. First, that the Northern California coastline possessed enormous beauty. Second, that this beauty was in danger of destruction through development. Since the 1940s, Dr. Griffin has worked tirelessly to preserve the magnificent and pristine beauty of the Northern California Coast. Dr. Griffin is the author of "Saving the Marin -- Sonoma Coast."

Dr. Griffin showed us many stunning photographs which exhibit the beauty of the area in which we live and he endeavored to impress upon us the necessity of protecting that beauty.

It is Dr. Griffin's opinion that saving the Russian River should be a priority to Northern California. Due to watershed mismanagement, unprotected mining, and erosion from agriculture the Russian River has become a conservationist's nightmare and potentially a health hazard. Of those areas in the western United States, subject to regular flooding, the Russian River is the worst.

As a testimonial for the good works of Dr. Griffin as well as the necessity of his endeavors, Terry Price shared with us a vivid memory of taking his son fishing at the River and of being in a beautiful pristine setting, just about to begin fishing, when a bulldozer came from around the bend to dredge rock from the River. Terry recalled how embarrassed he was that his son should be witnessing this spectacle and how reading Dr. Griffin's book had inspired him to make his own conservation efforts a priority over the next several years.

Discussion re: Bylaws

Due to the level of strong emotions, confusion and misunderstanding which still exist concerning the proposed bylaws changes, it was voted that this issue be tabled until an entire assembly could be had to fully discuss the matter at the group level. An assembly to discuss the proposed bylaws changes has been set for August 31, 1998. As far as other groups are concerned, our group will be dark that week. Also, the proposed start time for that meeting will be 12:15 p.m.. These adjustments are for the purpose of accommodating as much time for discussion as possible.

Off the Wall, Notes from the 8/11/98 Board Meeting

  • It was discussed and decided that the nomenclature for the clubs various accounts should be changed so as  to be less confusing.
  • There are big things happening in the international service arena.  The first meeting of the committee headed up by Paul Schwartz went very well.  Potential project countries include various countries in South America and Africa.  The next meeting will be on August 19 at noon at Mistral Restaurant.
  • Currently, we receive a ¢50 rebate from Los Robles Lodge on each meal purchased.  That will end in September.  Discussion was had as to whether or not to move the meeting place.
  • So far our group has the highest attendance in the area.  This may not be true for this month, however.
  • The public relations committee headed by Terry Price needs help.  Anyone with an hour to spare should call Terry at 542-8908.
  • It was suggested that during our fundraising drives we should have spot speakers coming from the organizations to which we are planning to donate funds to give us a five-minute pitch as to why theirs is a good program to donate to.
