CLUB ASSEMBLY

Wake-up call!

Following Pat Sizemore in writing the bulletin is a tough act (or really impossible) to follow. Anyway, here is a "dry" bulletin that is a good cure for insomnia. Glorious Leader Richard woke us up with a loud bell and promptly got things moving. Ray Schofield got us organized with the pledge. Bill Dotson gave an inspiring "poem on a little card" for our Rotary moment. A near record 15 Visiting Rotarians, who were looking forward to a chance at the $1,030 raffle pot, were introduced by Steve Kay and then unceremoniously given the boot by King Richard so we could have our assembly. One came all the way from British Columbia with a banner. There are some unconfirmed reports of rather colorful commentary regarding our hospitality. Guest and prospective new member Ed Rich was introduced by Paul Schwartz. Ed was allowed to stay.

Holland Youth Exchange

Paul Stychno introduced four students who will be travelling to Holland July 17 to August 7, 1998. They include Paul’s sons David and John, Joe Perez’ son Alex, and Gil Lucas’ son Gregory. Pete and Aat Hoogland were recognized for their outstanding work in organizing this exchange over many years.

Make-ups

Be sure to contact Bob Harris to get credit; don’t rely on other clubs to send info.

"Good-bye Polio" bumper stickers

Be sure to buy lots of these at $1.00 each; a total of 57 were sold at this meeting.

General Recognition Dept. (a.k.a.: fines!)

Jim Valinoti received his Past President’s badge – no fine! Mike Mullins was not fined for forgetting a certain award plaque.   Bets are already being taken concerning how much longer King Richard will be able to last with this kinder, gentler approach.  There are some indications that he is already beginning to suffer the initial symptoms of Valinotisitis (that rare condition which afflicts Rotary presidents plaguing them with the insistent uncontrollable need to fine Rotarians for any or no comprehensible reason).

Raffle

Dennis Wilkinson missed the lucky $1,030 marble. Scott Bartley declined to disclose what happened to his $20 or $25 winning ticket, but returned to his table empty handed – probably a donation of some type.

Internal Service Team Recognition and Reminder

Thanks to:  Jeff Ray and/or Dale Sipe for set up and take down; Steve Kay for greeting visiting Rotarians; Ron Street for selling raffle tickets; Ray Schofield for leading us in the pledge; Bill Dodson for our Rotary Moment; and to Ray Matisson for this Bulletin.

Next up to bat: Jeff Ray and/or Dale Sipe to set up and take down; Paul Schwartz to greet visiting Rotarians; Rick Rybicki to do ticket sales; YOU will lead us in the pledge; Martin Miller will give us an invocation; and will also write the bulletin.

Assembly Highlights

President & King Richard Standard launched the assembly with a motivational poem by Debbie Kennedy, "Our Dreams in Action" and a message to identify the vision for SRWRC on a global and local level. He and Mark Decker reminded us about the brochures and videos available to help promote Rotary. President Richard advised that July is Literacy Month - one suggestion is to go out and read to someone. He then summarized the ambitious goals and plans for the year – learn more about Rotary, membership growth, expanded humanity services, SOS awareness, fund raising, Interact, fellowship enhancement, more good "theme" programs, etc. The 1998-99 officers and directors were introduced, and outgoing people were recognized.

Pick Your Dream Vacation packets with ten tickets each were distributed by Lori Burmeyer. Our goal is to sell 1,000 tickets @ $30 each before the final turn-in date (September 28th). The drawing will be held on Oct. 2. Four prizes will be announced: 1st - First Class Travel worth $10,000 or $7,500 cash; 2nd - $1,500, 3rd - $500; 4th - $250. About 700 brochures were mailed to past ticket holders and others listed on Gil Lucas’ data base. Team captains will be calling – get busy!!!

Vocational Services – According to the translator, Ken Danzie needs more interviewers – 6 to 8 hours/year; also people to give short talks to students.

Membership Sally Kennedy has three great team captains and needs two more – 4 hours per month max. Our goal is to bring in 15 new members (net) this year. Cards will be distributed with a request to fill these out - more details later.

Club Service InternalJanet Codding needs more volunteers in several areas. She particularly needs people to help set up and take down the new sound system; this requires some training so that the equipment will stay "healthy".

Club Service ExternalMark Decker is seeking people to become certified at the media center to show videos and give presentations. He also encourages ideas and volunteers for fellowship evenings (fireside chats), help with the shoe give-a-way program, bell ringing and other events. This year the BBQ and big raffle drawing will be combined into one event on October 2nd

71398_2.jpg (14722 bytes)International ServicePaul Schwartz said we need to plant some seeds for future exchanges and other humanitarian projects where we can make a difference. Harry Rubins (right) noted that $100 will be billed annually to new members for the Foundation contribution. GSE chair Paul Stychno advised that another team from overseas will visit us next year.

Programs Mark Matson is always looking for good speakers, especially those who can provide a topic that fits with the "theme of the month".

Team 2000 – D.G. Elect Mike Merrill is seeking a lot of help. He will be sure to boost our club during his tenure in 1999-2000.

Bulletin Editor David Bjorklund

The Bulletin is in need of 2-4 writers who are willing to put pen to paper (figuratively speaking) once every couple of months or so to make The Bulletin a reality (or as close to it as it will ever get).  The commitment involves about an hour or two every 2 months.  Also, bit pieces will be accepted and guest writers.

Off the Wall

Notes from the  July 14, 1998 Board Meeting will be in next week's bulletin.
