PEARL HARBOR DAY

December 7, 1998

Openings

Glorious Leader King Richard gonged our vocal group to disorganized "order". Janet Codding (stay tuned – we’ll hear more about her later) and Pete Hoogland motivated us with a patriotic pledge and Rotary Moment. Bill Imboden introduced 10 Visiting Rotarians, who were buying tickets for a chance at the $1,440 orange marble.

GUESTS and (hosts)

Noel Buehler (John Withers), Ron Allen (Joe Perez for Paul Stychno), Doug Lehman (Chuck Baker?)

Raffle - We Have a Winner!

Janet Codding Picks the Marble Janet Goes Ape

Janet Picks a Marble.

The Crowd Goes Wild.

Congratulations to Janet Codding for drawing the illusive $1,440 orange marble. She immediately pledged $100 toward the Paul Harris fund and will think about the rest. Guest Ron Allen won the $25 consolation prize.

Contacts for Crab Feed Needed: We need to arrange for transportation, lodging and rental car for one week trips to Mexico and Hawaii. We need contacts, names and phone numbers of people who can help us put this together. Contact Ron Street with names or numbers of people who are in the know.

GSI team leader is Neil Silverman who will travel to Philippines in March with two non-Rotarians from our district.

Attendance – SRWRC was #1 in the District in October – thanks to our diligent members.

Membership Update: to keep the records straight, the following people, as of 1/1/99 will no longer be members of Santa Rosa West Rotary: Dennis Crandall, Laura Zlot, Patrick Sizemore, Sallie Kennedy, Mike Levinson, Mary Farha, and Ted Miles. We thank them for their support and camaraderie and wish them the best of luck and success in all their future pursuits.

International Committee is meeting next Tuesday (12/15/98), at 12:00 noon. Location is still being worked out. Contact Paul Schwartz.

Kid Street Theatre on Saturday, December 12, 1998: Janet Codding invites big kids to bring little kids at 1:00 p.m. to join in children's holiday arts and crafts, multicultural art and stories, and food and beverages, followed at 2:00 p.m. by "A Winter's Wish" play and holiday songs. The place is 54 West 6th Street, Old Railroad Square, Santa Rosa. Dress is casual. The suggested family donation is $25.00.

22nd Annual Christmas Craft's Faire at the Fairgrounds: John Palmer will be selling tickets in December. Our SOS Program is the principal beneficiary.   The XMAS FAIRE  will be held Dec. 11-12.  They are seeking raffle gift donations as well as volunteers to sell raffle tickets and provide other assistance as well.

Windsor Rotary Club is having a special speaker, Captain Al Haynes of Unitied Airlines, who will be sharing with them the inspiring and life changing story of United 232.  January 19, 1998, 7:00 a.m., probably at Luther Burbank, $10.00, continental breakfast, call Beverly Graham at (707) 838-3737 for reservations and info.

Bob Harris is in the process of updating the Membership Roster.   If you have any changes or updates to your info, contact Bob ASAP.  Also, if you have updates to your e-mail address or fax number, contact David Bjorklund.

The cost of lunch will increase from $11.00 to $12.00, starting January 4, 1998. The additional dollar will be used to cover the costs for guests who attend our meetings.  Previously, we had a rebate system arranged with Los Robles Lodge wherein a portion of each lunch that was collected went to the club for this purpose.  However, when they increased the price of lunch they did not add the rebate into the new cost.  Please direct any questions or concerns regarding this matter to Richard Standard or Bob Harris.

District Conference 2000

Mike Merrill and Bill Fisher announced that the Sun Princess cruise ship has selected for the millenium conference "in transit" between SF and Vancouver. One-way fares are quoted in the range of $250 to $400 per person; attendees will have the option of paying more to continue the cruise through the Inland Passage or fly back to SFO.

Multi-Cultural Center Thanks Gary Dugger

PROGRAM, Social Advocates for Youth (SAY)

Eric Cook from Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) gave an excellent overview of the youth oriented programs and services available in Sonoma County. SAY is staffed by five high school students; at least two are bilingual. The services range from job counseling and placement to gang prevention and runaway shelters. It is funded primarily by two foundations (DeMeo and Roberts), PIC, PASCO, United Way, and the city of Santa Rosa. The student staff handles brochures, telemarketing and peer counseling and job referrals. The computer based Job Link is being used more extensively through the local schools. Youths are available for residential and commercial temporary and part-time jobs. SAY will handle payroll, worker’s comp, and liability insurance as a convenience to clients. Examples of the types of jobs are rain gutter cleaning, yard clean-up and other incidental tasks. Overall, this was a very interesting program.
