For Whom the Bell ClangsNovember 30, 1998At 12:32 p.m. today President Richard Standard clanged the bell to open our meeting, shortly after Louis Capuano had demonstrated a two-and-one-half gainer with the rice spoon in the buffet line. Ray Schofield led the pledge of allegiance. In a poignant Rotary Moment, Bill Gittins reminded us that we need to continue to send money and supplies to Nicaragua and Honduras to aid the victims of Hurricane Mitch and to assist in the recovery efforts there. Bill Dodson, serving as the "Kitchen Chair" for the up-coming Crab Feed, took a podium opportunity to ask the members to suggest a new, more elegant title for his job. Bob Harris suggested "Crabs 'R Us" might work. Bill then introduced nine visiting Rotarians. We also had four guests today. Crab Feed Sell-Out And Other Announcements16th Annual Crab Feed on Saturday, January 16, 1999: Tom Tessier announced that all tickets are sold.
22nd Annual Christmas Craft's Faire at the Fairgrounds: John Palmer announced that he will be selling tickets in December. Our SOS Program is the principal beneficiary. The XMAS FAIRE will be held Dec. 4-6 and Dec. 11-12. They are seeking raffle gift donations as well as volunteers to sell raffle tickets and provide other assistance as well. Credit Where Credit is Due: Bill Fisher has been chided pretty mercilessly for the assistance he has given in providing the group with some of its more infamous speaking engagements. However, in all fairness, Bill has on more than one occasion, been instrumental in arranging some of the most interesting and enjoyed speakers the group has had. One example being Mike Hayden of "Thinking Lightly, Inc." who came to his incredible work with us last week. Windsor Rotary Club is having a special speaker, Captain Al Haynes of Unitied Airlines, who will be sharing with them the inspiring and life changing story of United 232. January 19, 1998, 7:00 a.m., probably at Luther Burbank, $10.00, continental breakfast, call Beverly Graham at (707) 838-3737 for reservations and info. Thanks from Central America: President Rich Standard read a letter from Lou del Sol, on the scene in Central America, thanking us for our donation of $1,200 to aid the hurricane victims. The Power of Laughter: President Rich Standard read a piece about the curative effect of laughter. It really does keep us healthy and positive. Crab Feed Auction Donations: Ron Street may be calling you to inquire whether you have a donation for the Crab Feed auctions. He says that "Yes" or "No" are acceptable answers, but "Maybe" or "I'll get back to you" are not. Mark Decker is still looking for Bell Ringers (two at a time) for 1-hour shifts at various locations for one day only December 17th . Please sign up if you would like to help. Bob Harris is in the process of updating the Membership Roster. If you have any changes or updates to your info, contact Bob ASAP. Also, if you have updates to your e-mail address or fax number, contact David Bjorklund. The cost of lunch will increase from $11.00 to $12.00, starting January 4, 1998. The additional dollar will be used to cover the costs for guests who attend our meetings. Previously, we had a rebate system arranged with Los Robles Lodge wherein a portion of each lunch that was collected went to the club for this purpose. However, when they increased the price of lunch they did not add the rebate into the new cost. Please direct any questions or concerns regarding this matter to Richard Standard or Bob Harris. Well-Deserved RecognitionsJohn Withers, recently at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, brought us up to date about Minnesota. There were a couple blizzards while he was there, one of which produced 93 mph winds and the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded. The political climate was no better. He told us about Jessie "The Body" Ventura's stunning election as Governor. John was fined $20.00 for this story. President Richard Standard, with Minnesota roots himself, followed with a northern Minnesota "Great Genie" joke. He fined himself $10.00. Ginny Pitts, a blonde herself, told a blonde joke. She was fined $10.00. Terry Price, with 2 winners out of 3 in the November elections, and 9 winners out of 10 overall, was fined $30.00 because of political junk mail produced by other campaigns. Jim Hinton, fined $20.00 last week for spouting off about the "Big Game" victory by Stanford, was fined another $10.00 for missing so many meetings the last few months while working on his cabin at Kirkwood. Gary Dugger, a new grandfather, made a $100.00 contribution to the Rotary Foundation in honor of the birth. Patsy Barnes, next year's president-to-be, recently back from a trip to Spain, was fined $20.00 for her travel this year. Neil Silverman, also a traveling man, was fined $20.00 concerning his trip to Australia.
