Santa
Rosa West

Light It Up!November 23, 1998The meeting of Santa Rosa West Rotary was called to order by President Richard Standard. Ron Street led the pledge with the Rotary moment shared by Ken Dansie. Ken was confused by El Nino or El Nina or ELL NINEYA something to do with the weather. Mike Moore was not present to provide the correct pronunciation for Ken's broken English. Jim Hinton obviously confused Stanfords defense with some other team. Another boring the "BIG GAME" and 4th consecutive win for the Cardinal over the Blue & Gold of Cal. Jim then proudly announced the visiting Rotarians: From Santa Rosa Floyd, Bob, Paul, Carl, Bill Jon, Mark, John, Phil, Cynthia & Dan. From Sebastopol Jeff, Bruce and Jackie. From Sonoma Valley Ted From Petaluma Art. The furthest visitor was Walt from Gelth, Ontario, Canada. AnnouncementsRon Street, in his very tactful delivery, basically asked members to respond when called for donations to the Crab Feed by answering "YES" or "NO" when asked to contribute to our major fundraiser. Either answer is acceptable. "call me back" is not!!!! And, by the way, a "YES" is preferable! Harry Rubins reminded all of us that prudent tax planning is to make contributions before the end of 1998 to take advantage of tax benefits for charitable contributions. Contributions made to Paul Harris and the Crab Feed are deductible in the year given. Hence, GIVE prior to December 31, 1998. Paul Stychno announced that the GSE Team has been selected and two candidates came from our club nominees: Jim Parks and Lisa Greenfield. Mark Decker passed a sign up sheet for Bell Ringers (two at a time) for 1-hour shifts at various locations for one day only December 17th . Please sign up if you would like to help.
Chris Rosell announced that we would be electing officers for 1999 and 2000 in 2 weeks. Bob Harris is in the process of updating the Membership Roster. If you have any changes or updates to your info, contact Bob ASAP. Also, if you have updates to your e-mail address or fax number, contact David Bjorklund. The XMAS FAIRE which benefits the SOS Program will be held Dec. 4-6 and Dec. 11-12. They are seeking raffle gift donations as well as volunteers to sell raffle tickets and provide other assistance as well. The cost of lunch will increase from $11.00 to $12.00, starting January 4, 1998. The additional dollar will be used to cover the costs for guests who attend our meetings. Previously, we had a rebate system arranged with Los Robles Lodge wherein a portion of each lunch that was collected went to the club for this purpose. However, when they increased the price of lunch they did not add the rebate into the new cost. Please direct any questions or concerns regarding this matter to Richard Standard or Bob Harris. NOW BACK TO THE CRAB FEED!All corporate tables are sold out and there are only 52 individual tickets remaining. Please, Please, Please, if you really want to go DO NOT WAIT TO GET YOUR TICKETS! This is always a sold out event. AND, really, truly, really truly, please help us get contributions for the live and silent auctions. WE REALLY NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE! (Bob Marigos heart cannot take all this stress!!!!) Craft Talk: Steve KaySteve Kay gave his craft talk and confessed to being born in San Francisco attending Lincoln High School. Steve and Mike Holmgren graduated UC Berkeley and had minor participation in Peoples Park picnics culminating in tear gas and Chaos. Steve has a pre-law degree and a degree in architecture from a school in Southern California in the UC system. After graduation he spent a year in France. A couple of years later in 1982, he met his wife at a wedding. He then decided to go to work. He started his own practice (do you notice all these guys that charge hourly rates ALWAYS start a "practice"?) in Marin. He then got a real job with BDM in Santa Rosa. He is now the Marketing Director. BDM is a Design and Build Firm. A unique concept because they can build for a guaranteed price. (A long way from a "practice" ) Santa Rosa West is Steves third Rotary Club since Ross Valley and Marin Sunrise. Why Rotary? The fraternity and sorority and good works that Rotary achieves. Well, thats his speech ..and hes stickin to it! SR Rotary West Honored by SSUPresident Richard displayed a plaque from Sonoma State University honoring our club and recipients for their achievement at Sonoma State. Mike Merrill: Bequest to Foundation, Great Way to GoMike Merrill DG elect, was honored for his Gift to the Permanent Foundation. Mike explained how easy it is to become a benefactor and get back at your kids (all at the same time). A gift to the permanent foundation of $1,000 or more either in CASH now, or a bequest (GIFT LATER), much later! "Why?", you ask. By making a gift the permanent foundation you give Rotary the ability to make an incredible impact in the World. Currently Rotary District 5130 (us) has received a $500,000 grant to span 3 countries in South & Central America for infrastructure improvements. The permanent fund's goal is to raise two hundred million dollars by the year 2005. Currently, the fund has $90,000,000 in cash and $80,000,000 in bequests pledged. There are currently 5,700 benefactors throughout the world. If you would like to learn more about the program call Mike and pick up the three simple forms that can allow you to complete this lifetime legacy for your and your family. General Recognition (aka: FINES)Jan Codding was recognized for 2 business trips, including 1 to Park City, Utah and a Hot Tub in a Crater .$20.00 Ken Dansie went to see his parents and enroll his daughter in Art School in London. Ken immediately gave Bob Marigo a lesson in Socialism regarding books, tuition etc .You had to be there. $20.00 Dennis Wilkenson was allowed to pay $20.00 for Denver Broncos 11 & 0 record. Jim Hinton $20.00 for a misdemeanor. John Palmer $20.00 for a lost badge. Raffle6 Marbles with $1,380 in the pot. Our speaker picked two tickets. Mike Merrill tried for the Orange Marble and had the same success as Cal at the big game. Ken Dansie promptly donated $25.00 to the community fund for having the winning ticket. PROGRAM: Thinking Lightly, Inc.Our speaker Mike Hayden an artist and sculptor gave us an enlightening program from "Thinking Lightly, Inc." Creators of Spectralite. Mike has his art displayed all over the world. Mike patented a concept he developed several years ago. It basically is holograms sandwiched between materials. Gator grading and patches grading are integrated into materials by suspending a hologram between layers of glass. His slide program showed his work in Glasgow, Scotland, and various libraries in Michigan Mikes designs in light create rainbows into space. This design makes for a soothing environment, but also eliminates much of the infrared and ultraviolet rays that can be harmful to the environment. The materials and sculptures provide architectural interest and diversity to all styles and ages of property. Mikes wife helps make it a family business by utilizing her talents as a professional photographer. She is responsible for the presentation materials for Thinking Lightly, Inc. NOW BACK TO THE CRAB FEED!Do your part. Ask a friend or business associate to help us in our pursuit to raise $40,000 for the children of Sonoma County. We cant do it without you. Respectfully submitted 11/25/98 10:30am. Ron Street. |
