The Travelers
John Withers went on and on and on and on and on............Just kidding John.
Indeed John and his wife just got back from a fabulous vacation. They started in
London, took the train thru the tunnel to Paris, then on to the South of France to
Avignon, home of the Popes for centuries, then on to........I cant possibly go on
due to the length of the newsletter. But thanks for sharing John. It sounds like a
wonderful trip.
Mike Merrill was in Las Vegas on a working???? vacation, actually working for
Rotary. He attended a Governors Executive Training Session. There were past District
Governors and incoming District Governors and 6 former presidents of Rotary. From the
western part of the United States came the best ideas and innovative thinking. You
wouldn't be just a little biased would you Mike? Our district had 10 past DGs there
so we were very well represented.

PROGRAM
Art King, Area District Representative from the Sunrise Club
introduced Louis Del Salo, our current District Governor. Louis is a former
President of the Ukiah Club and he and his wife Gladys are both Paul Harris
Fellows. It is a real honor to have DG Del Salo with us today.
Louis touched on 3 topics that are important to Rotary. The first is the
priorities of Rotary. It is wonderful to report that Polio Plus has almost eradicated
polio throughout the world. We cannot rest on our laurels. We have an obligation to tackle
future international projects. He mentioned our own collaboration, of our Santa Rosa clubs
in S.O.S., for example. We need to increase the visibility of Rotary.
The second topic was the history of Rotary. Our founder, Paul Harris, was raised
by his grandfather in Vermont. He later went on to Princeton and received a law degree.
Then he did something that gave him his social responsibility groundwork for the rest of
his life. He spent 5 years "vagabonding". That is he traveled all over the
United States, all over the world, meeting lots of different people, developing his
philosophies. He saw poverty and hopelessness. When he came back to the United States, he
settled in Chicago and set up his law practice. He disliked the "survival of the
fittest" attitude that business tends to become. Its not the winners against
the losers. He called together his friends and business associates on February 23, 1908,
and they started meeting at each others businesses to help the community. Hence the
Rotary name. Their first project was to install public facility toilets in downtown
Chicago.
The final topic of Louis was his personal feeling of Rotary. He got a great
thrill listening to our students talking about their desires and their futures. This is
where it starts. We need to have tolerance and a willingness to work. It was thrilling to
Louis when the Iron Curtain countries re-joined International Rotary.
Finally Louis left us with a few words, do good in the world, all of us together.
