Speech/Audio/Visual Contest

Opening

King Richard called the meeting to order at 12:25 and asked Lori Burmeyer to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Rotary moment was offered by Janet Codding, subbing for David Björklund. Janet did a great job as usual. You can always count on Janet.

Raffle Ticket Sales were conducted by Terry Price, once prolific at raising political funds, in non-election years does raffle ticket sales!

Dale Sipe Gets the Meeting Together

Chris Rosell (aka The Shark) was our smiling Greeter and introduced visiting Rotarians. Several Club members were still reeling from being hustled in billiards by Chris during the St. Pats Party at the Ale Works. Thanks to Mark Decker for coordinating the party. It is always fun to get together without the constraints of the lunchtime clock and over a cold beer.

Recognition:

Phil Talamantes announced he has 2 new grandchildren. He donated $100 to the Bob Lucas fund in honor of his grandchildren.

Brian Herndon just spent much time in Mexico and Hawaii. Apparently he preferred Hawaii, and was asked to pay a paltry sum of $20 for his travels. Being a bleeding heart (where ever did that term come from), he passed his fine on to his friend Jeff Ray (Such a friend Brian is).

Bob Marigo was recognized for his recent travels, and he passed his fine on, to whom I do not know.

Raffle

Rick Marino from El Molino High School had the right raffle ticket number to get a shot at drawing the orange marble. He was unsuccessful at winning the $960, much to the delight of each and every other attendee. And the "pot" keeps growing (no pun intended!) every week.

Preston Smith, member of the Windsor Rotary Club, won the $25 consolation prize. Not being familiar with Santa Rosa West custom of donating that $25 to some worthy cause, Preston kept the cash. Ignorance is bliss!

Program

Mike Moore gives Joe the business.
Joe Perez (left, on the right) then took the podium and introduced the program for the day, a special speech/audio visual contest for local area high school students from Piner and El Molino on the subject of "the future of volunteerism in our community". There was prize money awarded to each participant in the competition. The students were given the choice of presenting an audio visual/video on the subject, or giving a short speech. There were approximately seven presenters with a winner in each category.
There were three judges of the contest: Ed Beebout, TV50; Rob Singleton (KZST Radio), and Chris ? from the Press Democrat (last name escapes me). Thanks to Ken Dansie and Bob Zeni (below) of Price "Watermark" for their valiant efforts ot tally the votes while the entire Club was waiting for the results. Also, thanks to audio visual projection manager Alex Perez (he has learned a lot from his father) and timekeeper Paul Stychno.

Ken & Bob tally the votes.
The two teachers form the respective high schools who helped bring the applicants to the competition were Rick Massell of El Molino and Brigette Mansel of Piner High School.

The winners of the competition were Gian Valinoti of El Molino in the audio visual division and a young lady from Piner in the speech division. The student from Piner (sorry I do not have the name) told of her experience losing her home to fire and how volunteers came to the aid of her family.

She gained great hope and faith in people and the importance of volunteers through her personal trauma and now volunteers her time for numerous things. The message we heard from all of the students was that volunteering must come from the heart and that their is a greater need for volunteers today than ever before. The future of volunteerism looks bright, as we see expressions of this in our lives and schools every day. Congrats to all of the students and thanks to Joe and his team for putting this together.
