The IRS Wants You!

January 25, 1999

On A Clear Day . . .

It was a clear, crisp winter day when President Richard Standard opened our meeting at 12:30 pm today with a cheerful welcome to all. Steve Kay led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Ron Street offered a Rotary Moment prayer, thanking God for an abundance of crabs and a successful Crab Feed. Greeter Lori Burmeyer introduced seven visiting Rotarians, six of whom were members of the Santa Rosa Downtown Club and one was from Fort Bragg. Pete Lamonica introduced his guest, Terri Gellato. 012599_1.jpg (19189 bytes)

Ron Allen was the raffle ticket seller, and in a rare sweep he also held the winning numbers on both raffle tickets drawn.

Announcements

Bob Marigo offered belated congratulations to Ron Street for his extraordinary efforts in helping to put together a successful Crab Feed. Ron was applauded for a job well done.

Paul Schwartz reminded the members of the International Service Committee that its next meeting was tomorrow, January 26, at Mistral's Restaurant at noon.

Ken Dansie (above) announced that he needed about six members to devote an hour or so during the week of February 8 to interview Ridgeway High School students.

Mike Moore offered several interpretive comments during Ken's remarks, and others at Mike's table also complimented Ken on his speaking skills, including pronunciation, intonation and clarity.

Richard Standard announced that the Sebastopol Club is doing a "Fun Train" to Reno March 2-4. Any member of our club is invited to join them, but reservations need to be made by the end of this week.

The Wine Library Associates of Sonoma County present as their annual membership meeting an evening exploring the under-appreciated splendors of Sauvignon Blanc at Paradise Ridge Winery, 4545 Thomas Lake Harris Drive, Santa Rosa, on Thursday evening, February 4, 1999, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The cost is $20 for members of the Wine Library Associates and $30 for non-members. You may order tickets by calling 431-8298 using a credit card, or by mail, with check or money order, purchase tickets at WLASC, 10934 Eastside Road, Healdsburg, CA 95448. In person you may purchase tickets at Paradise Ridge (address above) or the Wine Library, Piper and Center Streets, Healdsburg.  More details may be found at: http://www.sonoma.lib.ca.us/annmtg99.html

Challenged Skiers, remember, this year's Ski Challenge will be on the weekend of March 5, 1999. The particulars will be announced as soon as they are known. But, as this trip generally fills up very quickly, advanced registration is advisable.

Blue Badge Presentations

President Rich Standard presented Blue Badges and congratulations to Terri Evans and Ed Rich. Both were warmly applauded.

Election of Officers and Directors

Next year's slate of Officers and Board of Directors nominated to take us into the millenium and beyond was presented by Scott Bartley. They are:

Officers: President - Patsy Barnes; Vice President - Charles Stark; Secretary - Bob Harris; Treasurer - Ty Forsich.

Directors: Two Year Terms: David Bjorklund, Ron Street, Mark Decker, Janet Codding. One Year Terms: Terri Evans, Terry Price, Ken Dansie, Paul Schwartz, Richard Standard.

Bob Miller moved that this exceptional slate of Officers and Directors be elected. They were, unanimously.

Recognitions

Neil Silverman and Tom Boylan were assessed $10.00 each for their starring roles on a TV 50 feature on the Salvation Army.

Ken Dansie was recognized for $10.00 for his appointment as a member of the California Human Development Board.

012599_5.jpg (8211 bytes) David Bjorklund (left) was hit for $25.00 for boasting "the puck stops here." It seems that he is an undefeated goaltender (2 wins, 0 losses) in the Santa Rosa Men's Hockey League. He agreed to take his mask off for the next meeting.

John Withers recounted polar temperatures and chill factors in Rochester, Minnesota, where he recently visited the Mayo Clinic for a new knee but was sent home without surgery due to inclement chest conditions. In view of the cost of this round-trip-for-nothing, he escaped a fine.

Ken Kushner magnanimously volunteered $250.00 after admitting he bought a lavish 8-day cruise for 12 people on a 60 foot yacht. He promised to work the others on this cruise for Rotary donations. Great class, Ken! 012599_6.jpg (10427 bytes)
012599_7.jpg (5111 bytes) Ty Forsich was fined $25.00 for also taking a lavish cruise, moving up to the fourth floor to spectacular new offices for Moss Adams. Ty will have a corner office with a great view, of course.

Raffle Monopoly

Ron Allen sold the raffle tickets, bought $20.00 worth of them, and won both raffle draws. He came out $5.00 ahead on the $25.00 ticket, but he did not win the $840.00 on the first ticket.

Program: The IRS Wants You

012599_9.jpg (21270 bytes) Our speaker today, Kyle Martin, an estate tax attorney, is employed by the IRS as an auditor of estate and gift tax returns in the Northern California District. He graduated from University of Kansas and San Francisco Law School. Mr. Martin described the audit process, the pitfalls of deficient estate planning, and the usual red flags that generate audits. He also discussed estate planning techniques to minimize the IRS bite.

His advice was to consult a knowledgeable and competent attorney, accountant, or financial planner now, not later.

This Late Edition of the Bulletin was written by Jim Hinton, who was gone most of the week due to a family medical emergency and had to defer his journalistic duty until the week-end.
