January 11, 1999

Openings

011199_12.jpg (5712 bytes)Glorious Leader King Richard (right) brought our lively group to relative "order." Past President Jim Valinoti led us in the pledge and Fred Zmarzly compared the value systems contained in the "Native American Commandments" to that of Rotary International for our Rotary Moment.

011199_5.jpg (6104 bytes) Jim Underhill introduced seven Visiting Rotarians, most from the Downtown club.

GUESTS and (hosts)

Glenn Dowd, former P-47 W.W.II pilot (Roger Olson), Ron Allen of Ron Allen and Associates (Paul Stychno), Lisa Greenfield, Chairperson of pre-school and GSI team member (Ann Abrams), Susan Silverman (Neil Silverman)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Crab Feed

Chris Rosell advised everyone to pre-register to avoid lines. Turn in $$ and ticket stubs to Mark Decker; donated prizes and cash donations go to Bob Marigo. There is a waiting list for tickets.  Anyone who cannot attend should contact Tom Tessier.

Dennis Wilkinson needs more volunteers to help with bar.

Challenged Skiers

Remember, this year's Ski Challenge will be on the weekend of March 5, 1999. The particulars will be announced as soon as they are known. But, as this trip generally fills up very quickly, advanced registration is advisable.

Oh My Captain, My Captain...

Windsor Rotary Club is having a special speaker, Captain Al Haynes of United Airlines, who will be sharing with them the inspiring and life changing story of United 232.  January 19, 1999, 7:00 a.m., at Luther Burbank, $10.00, continental breakfast, call Beverly Graham at (707) 838-3737 for reservations and info.

January Is Rotary Awareness Month

Check out the Rotary International WebSite and remember, videos and literature are available for us in our continuing effort to share the gift of Rotary in our community. In celebration of Rotary Awareness Month, it might be a good idea for us to bring a friend to lunch at our group to share with people what Rotary is all about.

Hey! What's With the Pictures?

011199_3.jpg (7845 bytes)Dennis Wilkinson (left) recently acquired a digital camera.  He generously offered to take pictures of this meeting to give us a sampling of this new technology.  If we decide we like it, it could alleviate the occasional problems we have had with inadequate picture quality, decrease the lag time in getting the Bulletin up and out and (eventually) decrease the cost of the bulletin by avoiding the cost of film processing.  Have an opinion?  Share it.  Contact Richard Standard, David Bjorklund or Bob Harris.

New Member Induction: Ron Allen

Congratulations to Ron Allen (center) of Ron Allen and Associates, sponsored by Paul Stychno (right). Ron was inducted by our excruciatingly eloquent past president Jim Valinoti (left).

Donated items for San Jose, Costa Rica Rotary Club

Paul Stychno reported that the San Jose club needs crutches, wheel chairs, canes, walkers to be sent to their "lending bank". (How about John Wither’s old neck brace or Ray Mattison’s old knee brace?)

Dear John

John Withers will not be gracing us with his vigorous presence for a short while.  He is in Minnesota for some surgery.  He will be staying at the Raddison Hotel, 150 S. Broadway, Rochester, MN 55904; (507) 281-8000, fax (507) 281-4280. Cards, calls, visits and other forms of good humored harassment would be appreciated (though don't expect John to admit it).

General Recognition (AKA: fines)

011199_1.jpg (6867 bytes) Bob Marigo sold his business and made a $200 cash donation to the crab feed in lieu of a fine – thanks Bob!
Mike Mullins was nailed $40 for attending the new State AG’s bash, which he characterized as a "shark feeding frenzy" with all those lawyers and lobbyists. 011199_8.jpg (4505 bytes)
011199_10.jpg (5055 bytes) Paul Schwartz changed companies (now with Orion Partners) and paid a "cheap" $25 advertising and change of address fee; he is now at Stony Point Lakes and has a new phone # 545-8300.
Duncan Holt got off softly for $20 for his recent "wanderlust" with the motorhome. 011199_4.jpg (5494 bytes)

Birthday recognitions to Jim Valinoti, Bob Harris and Teddy Sipe (Dale pays the fine).

Raffle

New member Ron Allen drew the wrong marble for the $800 pot, but won the $25 consolation prize; he’s the guy who buys lots of tickets, and has become an almost automatic winner.

PROGRAM

011199_9.jpg (12689 bytes)Our own Neil Silverman (left) and wife Susan narrated a slide presentation of their 1997 trip to Brazil as Rotary International Volunteers. They spent a month working at a dental clinic in the town of Santarem on the Tapajos River (tributary of the Amazon). Neil helped convert bad teeth into good ones and put new teeth in mouths that were lacking some. They also worked with "natural medicine" (this probably worked because they don’t need HMO approval). He also worked with interns, improving their OJT and general learning experience. There are only four paved roads in town. As far as this writer could tell, the dirt roads, despite the potholes, look wider, smoother, safer and less congested than our own Highway 101. We were also treated to scenes of their travels around the country and insight into the lives of the "boat people". It was so hot and humid, that they braved swimming in the river with pirhana. The low point of the trip was the theft of credit cards in Rio. The high point sounded like the Carnival Festival in Salvador Bahia. Overall, this was a picturesque and informative program about our Rotary volunteers in action. Great Job Neil and Susan!

This Bulletin was written by Ray Mattison.
