Opening Fluff

At the hour of 12:30 P.M., and with a smooth, creamy and processed presentation, our own Prez Jim, aka Prez Valiveeta, opened the ceremonies with a somewhat authoritaitive "whang" of the Rotary bell.

Have you voted for
Santa Rosa West yet?

Duncan Holt grabbed and tugged at his waistband (a trait perfected by this bulletin writer) hiked up his old trousers and gave a fine tribute to Old Glory. Immediately thereafter, Janet Codding suggested one of two things: either that we are twice as smart as we were when we were half our present age, or that youth is wasted on the young. Take your pick. Personally I feel more like myself now than I did when I first got here.

Visiting Rotary personages numbered a modest 13. There were guests, including but not limited to Blind Willy Ferguson, six-string picker and creator of that old standard, "I've got a Rose Between My Toes From Walking Through the Hothouse to See You" and other popular ditties.

A Noun Smintz

There is a Board Meeting tomorrow at the usual place and hour which has since become history. Hope all went well. (By the way many of these announced activities are detailed in the Calendar, and links are provided.) Chris Rosell, who failed topography, advised that the annual Hoogland/Bartley BBQ takes place Monday, September 22, at the Hoogland ranchero, located per Chris between Olivet and Interstate 35, just west of Saint Louis. It was thereafter revealed that the correct location could be found by traveling West on Guerneville Road from Highway 101; right on Willowside to the entrance designated by an enourmous Rotary Wheel (right side of road), turn in and follow the wagon ruts to the cuisine of Chef Joseph. Attendance is mandatory. Wear or bring a jacket because it gets cold. No-Shows will be billed by our agressive staff to the tune of $25.

"Pick Your Dream" Travel Extravaganza: Dennis Crandall brought us all up to date on our Raffle. Ticket sales are doing well, but about 800 more need to be sold. See Dennis or Nancy Ramsey. The deadline is October 6. Dennis renewed the invitation to us us all to the Party on October 13, 1997, at the Cantina Restaurant where the winning ticket for the Windstar Cruise will be drawn! Spirits will be lifted and no doubt consumed. This date, the official observance of Columbus Day, there will no regular Club Meeting, but this Prize Party will function as a Club Meeting, and will be mandatory. To help advertise the Raffle, Contact Terry Price for posters to hang at your place of business and SELL, SELL SELL!!!

Janet Codding, shed of the above referenced philosophical thought, discussed openings for GSE leaders and members. Deadline is October 10. Incidentally, GSE is not a sports model of a Yugo sedan. It is the Rotary Group Study Exchange program, and particiapnts will be studying groups in Austria this year.

Jeff Ray again reminded all of the Annual Golf Tourney at Oakmont this coming Friday, September 12. A good turnout is expected. For non golfers, such as yours truly, "tuna" (dinner) will be served at the appropriate hour at the conclusion of the sphere smacking. See or call Jeff Ray or Bill Fisher for further particulars.

Ree Kog Nishun

"Well now let's see once," as many a Harvey County, Kansas Mennonite farmer is wont to say, what do we have to offer in the fining department this date? Oh yes, Terry Price was singled out as the winner of a twenty-year endurance event, to wit, marriage. He appropriately observed the gala event in Desolation Valley. $20.

Scott Bartley

Scott Bartley (above), recently published in the forum section of the PD, opined about the plight/state of downtown Santa Rosa. However, Scott, a recent inductee in the Order of the Exuding Aorta, was allowed to and did pass his $20 fine on to poor Chris Rosell, seated nearby, as a proximity penalty.

Jim Benoit

Jim Benoit (right) was fined a Jackson for going home to the family compound in Northern Idaho, where Jim was seen to be pelting persons with potatoes while parasailing.

Robin Marrs took off for an eight-day backpacking stint along the Pacific Crest Trail where he traversed approximatley sixty-four miles. A measly $15. He will be hit later for a trip to Scotland and a new grandaughter.

Sallie Kennedy Gary Dugger, a seasoned marital veteran, was assessed $25.

Sally Kennedy (left), recipient of the equivalent of an "atta girl," escaped the trauma of taxation.

Ginny Pitts was pleasantly surprised when hubby secretly flew in sis and then spirited all to Maui for a six-day birthday bash. $20.

John Hathaway (right) was tapped for $25 for aimless wandering about the globe, from L.A. to Peru, Philly to Germany, and for singing Home on the Range in E Flat (instead of G) at a Colorado dude ranch owned and operated by his daughter. Just call him "Curly."

Paul Stychno, Insurance

John Hathaway

Wrafull

Ticket 0874 drew no winners. However, Brian Herndon donated his winnin's from ticket 0856 to the scholarship fund/community fund/educational fund -- that fund we have floating in the cosmos officailly named the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa West Community Fund, Inc.

Pro Graham

We were favored to have as our guest speaker our good friend, neighbor and Past District Governor, John Blount, DDS, who, with tongue in cheek, made a few preliminary biting comments before delving into the arena of giving and why, as members of Rotary, we give freely and generously to others. Speaking for myself, John's sage and heartfelt words rekindled some good stuff. Good work, good program.

Yours in perpetual verbosity
