OpeningAt approximately 12:30 pm President Jim Valinoti opened the meeting and passed off to Bill Miller who led us in the pledge. Dennis Crandall's invocation entitled "New Beginnings" reminded us all that school for most young people is back in session (or about to be) and that we should support the teachers, students and schools that hold our futures in their hands. |

| Visiting Rotarians were welcomed to our club by Mark Decker and we met, once again, Paul Stychno the guest of missing Rotarian Joe Perez. |

Golf Tournament: Jeff Ray reminds us that the Santa Rosa West Rotary Golf Tournament is on September 12 at the Oakmont Executive Course. Contact Jeff to sign up to play and to help out running the tournament.
Roger Olson reports that the Eighth Annual Pacific Coast Air Museum Show last weekend was a "soaring" event. Sunday was all profit....netting the museum $14,000. Congratulations to all involved!
"Pick Your Dream" Travel Extravaganza: Dennis invites us all to the party on October 13, 1997, at the Cantina Restaurant where the winning ticket will be drawn! Contact Terry Price for posters to hang at your place of business and SELL, SELL SELL!!!
Chris Rosell paid a $20 fine for enjoying water sports at Lake Shasta.
John Ramsey who skipped the District Governor's Brunch and some how was missing when the DG visited our club, made sure he was on the spot when a client showed up with a large investment. It seems John also missed the class on "How to Negotiate a Fine at a Rotary Meeting" for he started with a paltry $20 offer and ending up being relieved of $100 (50% to Rotary, 50% to Multi-Cultural Center). Thanks John
Tom Skinner and Laura Zlot were thanked??? not fined??? seems like someone should have paid. Possibly President Jim who thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of wine, gourmet food and Smooth Jazz at the First Annual KJZY Wine Country Jazz Festival last Sunday at Rodney Strong Vineyards.
Mike Mullins paid another fine, $25, for once again appearing in print in a local newspaper.
Ken Dansie was caught off guard by President Jim's disclosure that his picture was included in a full page ad in Sonoma Business magazine. Ken pleaded "no knowledge" but a $20 fine was still levied.
Bill Fisher who has a "growing water business" especially since the recent rains complained there's no time to watch spiders spin webs. Bill was levied the standard $20 fine.
The pot is at $620 bucks and speaking of that Louie Capuano asked President Jim to pour the marbles out into his hand so he could pick. Luckily our Prez is not that easily swayed. Better luck next time Louie and keep buying those tickets. The tradition of donating the Twenty Dollars back to the club was continued by Arnie Carston who chose the Community Fund as the recipient.
Marc Matson introduced Detective Andy Romero from the Santa Rosa Police Department Gang Prevention Unit.
Santa Rosa is the only city north of San Francisco that has a full-time unit dedicated to gang prevention. Andy's goal is to divert young people away from gang related activities by going out on the streets and talking to them one on one. Gang members average 13 or 14 years of age and are frequently doing the dirty work of older, hard -core criminals. Although kids in gangs are primarily engaged in attacking rival gangs, innocent bystanders can be hurt if they get in the way. Andy sees more white, middle-class kids joining gangs and this he attributes to the break down in the family unit. Detective Romero wants to work with the gang prevention unit because "kids can be saved".
Nancy Ramsey followed Detective Romero's presentation with a reminder that we can help "save kids". There are kids out there who want and need help particularly to go on to school. Contact Nancy or the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for more information on how you can help.
