| Newly inducted President Jim Valinoti (left) attempted to take control at his first meeting, and almost had to wrestle the mike and podium away from recent debunkee, "what's his name" - Gliddings, Gibbits, or whatever (right)? | ![]() |
Dr. Carl Anderson tried to instill some sense of order with the Pledge, and Dennis Crandall provided an entertaining invocation. Silver tongued "truckmeister" Phil Talamantes introduced visiting Rotarians. Pat Sizemore thanked everyone again for their help with the debunking.
July 8 - Board meeting will have happened at Bank of the West by the time you read this.
July 14 - Tailgate BBQ and Crushers game in Rohnert Park; arrive at 5:30; dinner at 6:00; bring jackets (for Pacific air conditioning), caps and baseball gloves to catch foul balls. If you have not paid yet, please do so. Thanks to Jeff Ray for the great job organizing this event. Remember - this takes place of our "regular" noon meeting; do not go to Los Robles unless you just want to have another great lunch at Claus' Restaurant.
July 16 - Pete Hoogland's well organized three-week "Holland exchange" goes into high gear with the arrival of seven young people at MartinAir terminal at Oakland Airport about 4:00 p.m. on Wed. July 16. Pete Hoogland, Gil Lucas and Duncan Holt will meet the students and bring them to Pete's ranch about 7:30 p.m. The host families are reminded to pick up the jet lagged students and take them home. A number of great events and day trips are planned and being coordinated by several Rotarians. Special events to put on your calendars:
Sept. 12 - Golf tournament - details later.
FY 97-98 bills were handed out and include pre-paid fines; options are to pay in full now; pay 50% dues plus fines now and 50% by January 1; pay dues and fines up front and get credit for fines as you go; or pay fines as levied - a bit confusing; if in doubt, just pay up everything now.
| President Jim showed that he is the new "Don" with a near
record number of "recognitions" levied: Paul Schwartz, $15 for article in Sonoma Business; Rich Pratt, $10 for Certification in Business Valuation; |

Mike Mullins, $15 for new "pot" policy; Ed Burr, who got off lightly for his son showing up in a photo taken at the A's game, but no extra fine for sending others to far flung places; Don Ling and Richard Standard, $10 each for anniversaries; Dave Wattell, $5 recognition for his ongoing job search and upcoming anniversary; Ty Pforsich, $5 for blue badge ... |
| ... Tom Skinner, hammered for $25 for trip to Orlando, with sympathy credit allowed for hot humid weather and long lines; Laura Bugbee, $20 for trip to Peru and Bolivia on very little O2; Bill Imboden, $25 for a 23-state marathon, bumped to $100 for Paul Harris; Mike Merrill, $10 anniversary reminder. | ![]() Tom Skinner |
George Mickelsen missed the black marble for $500. Bill Doty donated his $20 to S.O.S.
Curtis Reinhardt introduced the FAA Air Traffic Control Chief, Dayle Buschkotter, who gave an informative and amusing presentation about sometimes exciting as well as stressful work of keeping the skies and airports safe. She described some events in her career, including a personal near miss. She has worked at the busiest LAX and Orange County with some of the most sophisticated navaids and radar systems to the quiet and lightly travelled facilities (Sonoma County) with binoculars and a windsock. About 10-15% of the controllers are women who work the same difficult shifts as their male counterparts. The outlook for Sonoma County Airport - no real expansion anticipated, and no priority for sophisticated radar system. United Express is the only commuter carrier serving this area, and runs with an 80% load factor, thanks to over-booking; other small carriers are considering service to resort destinations. She dodged the "political" questions - i.e., Windsor not a great spot for a new school, airport growth, etc.
To quote another speaker on the most important aviation safety objective - "Take-offs equal landings!"
