6898_4.jpg (16388 bytes)Bob Zeni introduced the two Piner High School Students who will receive our Scholarships: Becky Gong (to UCLA, Pre-Med in the fall) and John Sampson (to UC-Berkeley, computer science and Electrical Engineering). Bob emphasized the high standards of all the Students of the Month who have appeared before our club this past year. The judges are non-Rotarians and non-Piner folk, whose criteria include transcripts, difficulty of course work, community and school commitment, letters of recommendation and self-presentation. Piner Counselor Jan Hansen was praised for the $545,000 in scholarships received by Piner’s 295 member Class of ‘98.

After some coaxing and translating Ken Dansie took the podium to recognize 4 of the 8 Ridgeway Students for whom $250 has been deposited in scholarship aid at Santa Rosa Junior College. Counselor Brian Cox introduced Kim Dalby who wants to be a teacher; Zamia Loveless who wants to study agriculture; Gwendolen Brown, who plans a career in nursing, and Joanne Loza, aiming for the law. He spoke of their hard work and determination. The four not present were at work. Ken also thanked Chris Rosell and Michael Moore who interviewed scholarship candidates. These four, their counselor and parents present received a standing ovation. Good work Ken.

Program - Santa Rosa Junior College Update

6898_1.jpg (20061 bytes)Phil Talamantes introduced Dr. Robert Arguella (right), President of Santa Rosa Junior College and Linda Frank, Director of the SRJC Foundation, but not without a prior politically correct nod to visiting Rotarian Maureen from the DMV! President Arguella informed us that Phil and Dave Del Monte serve on the 25 member SRJC Foundation Board.

We learned that SRJC has a student body of 35,000. 60% are daytime, 40% are evening students. The average age of the 1152 graduates of the S.R.J.C. class of 1998 was 32 years compared to 27 overall.

60% of local High School graduates who continue with post-secondary education enroll at S.R.J.C. By 3 years out of high school, 80% of local students will take some course work there. Significantly, when students then transfer to a four year college their grades usually GO UP!

Within the year S.R.J.C. will be the only California community college to keep the name "Junior College". This is to honor a tradition of more than 80 years of quality education.

After thanking our club for much needed scholarship assistance, President Arguella reminded us of the uniqueness of the Exchange Bank Scholarship - $4 million will assist 4,700 students in the coming year. Scholarship help like this helps to assure a high quality of education.

SRJC’s external "campus" at Coddingtown is a great success. So far 2,300 have taken advantage of the 4, 6, or 8 - hour computer application classes. (Ray was on the assessment team which identified this need).

Money has been allocated from the California Governor’s construction budget for an 18 acre CRIMINAL JUSTICE TRAINING CENTER in Windsor. The instruction is currently held at the former Two Rock Coast Guard Station.

A 38,000 square foot HEALTH SERVICES BUILDING, named after former trustee Ben Race, will allow addition of Dental Hygiene and Physical Therapy programs to the seven existing health- related programs. Furthermore, the Dental Lab will serve as a dental clinic for low income persons.

Currently, around 7,000 men and women graduating from the Administration of Justice and Health Related Services departments are employed in our county.

Referencing the role of the S.R.J.C. Foundation in this construction project, President Arguella introduced Linda Frank. Linda (a nine year Rotarian) described the Foundation’s work: to raise private funds to assist students and provide resources for educational services at S.R.J.C..

The Foundation was created in February of 1969 and distributed $500 in scholarships in 1970. Today, it has $16 million in assets. Donors include S.R.J.C. alumni, businesses, S.R.J.C. employees and retirees. Contributions can be designated to benefit particular programs or groups and (just for your information) contributions to the Foundation are tax-deductible.

Ms. Frank promoted the current HEALTHY LIVES campaign, which they hope will raise $2 million toward paying for the new Health Services Building (which will cost approximately $10.5 million). Those who give $1,000 or more over the next three years will have their names memorialized on the Donor Wall.

Flyers at our tables invited us to the 80 Year Alumni event on Saturday, October 24, 1998.

Q & A:

  • About the Petaluma Campus – it is 45 acres. It maxed out this year at 5,500 students. There is an expansion planned.
  • Yes, there is a "re-entry program" for older and lapsed students.

President Jim gave our speakers a bottle of wine (presumable to share) and we adjourned on time.

Martin Miller-Hessel, today’s recycled scribbler.
