Three More Weeks with JIMMostly-down-hill-from-here President Jim Valinoti called us to order by welcoming Pete Hoogland back. Bill "Grandpa" Gittins led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Martin Miller-Hessels "Rotary Minute" - a thanksgiving for teachers. Visitors and GuestsJim Underhill introduced visiting Rotarians, and members introduced their guests: among them were Ginny Pitts son Randy, just graduated form Chico State; Linda Hemenway, a SRJC Computer Science Instructor and guest of Paul Schwartz; and Neil Silvermans son Josh, who is on his way to a Club Med job in Mexico (without Dad). New MemberTeri Evans, Finance Manager of Redwood Reliance, was inducted into the club: Welcome! Her sponsor, Don Ling was recognized for 40 years at R.R. Friends, employees and competitors threw a party and dedicated a flag pole in his honor and then they plaqued him. Naturally, he got fined. Fair warning, Teri. |

Pres. Jim thanked Bob Marigo, who in turn thanked all the (he
actually said men and women)...who collectively donated over $2,000 in advertising
for the Conference Program book, which gained Bob access to the head table. Good job. After eliciting Michael Moores definition of "Hat Trick" (three goals by a single player in a single hockey game), Jim announced that we won the "Best Bulletin" award for the third year in a row. Jim thanked outgoing member/editor Bo Simons (left - who is becoming a member of the Healdsburg Club closer to work). Bo thanked his team of writers. Now Dave Björklund has a standard to match. |
The Rotary International Convention is coming up this month in Indianapolis. Visit the Rotary International Web site for more details and a preview.
Bo Simons, after being recognized for his excellent work as bulletin editor, was given time to pitch the Sonoma County Wine Library annual fund-raiser. This year the theme is the Sonoma Odyssey Bayou Boogie, June 13, from 4 - 8 p.m (433-3772 for details and tickets). There will be Cajun music, food and yes, wine.
Bob Miller announced that the shoe program gave away $5,000 worth of shoes to 164 kids in 5 schools. A great job.
Bill Gittins reminded us of the JIM VALINOTI CELEBRATION, Saturday, June 27 at Lake Sonoma, campground 3. Maps will be available and the sign up sheet circulated. Bill also shared his son Johns recent certification to fly the Jet-stream and employment with TWA. Prez Jim directed Bills $20 contribution toward a Paul Harris.

The Bulletin Needs Your Help. Writers are needed for the up and coming Rotary year as well as for the 8th, 15th and 29th of this month. REMEMBER, the more people we have pitching in to write the bulletin, the higher quality of bulletin we will have and the easier it will be for everyone. Contact Dave Björklund by e-mail or at 576-7632.
Rotary International will highlight its commitment to drug abuse prevention during the June 6-10 1998 Special Session of the UN General Assembly. The June meeting is devoted to the fight against illicit production, sale and demand for narcotic drugs and substances. See the details in the Rotary International Newsroom.
| King of the Road:
If you see someone struggling with a monster motor home, its probably Brian
Herndon. Statistics: 37 feet, 300 HP diesel engine, 100 gallon capacity and $100
to PAUL HARRIS. Much ado about any empty bottle: It seems as though Bob Marigo got some fine spirits at the expense of Bob Harris along with his Hungry Man Dinner (scan the archives if you missed that story). Marigo seemed fine, but Harris looked thirsty. Its a tough life. What Did He Say?: Jim Sullivan approved of Jim Valinotis lodging recommendations for Glasgow Scotland. But he wishes they would learn English over there. |

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Horse Racing, And Then Some: Seems to have been the topic of a homily by John Withers, recently returned from points South, including Churchill Downs. So if you ever wondered "What makes a 'Thoroughbred'?" or "Why are fence posts in Kentucky round instead of square?" or the most common question sure to occur to most of us: "If I wish to purchase a thoroughbred, do I have to pay up front, or can I wait to see if everything works?," John is your man.
The black marble eluded Bryan; but John Withers has some left over luck from Kentucky and turned $20 back to the club.
Thanks to: Jim Underhill for greeting visiting Rotarians; Roger Olsen for selling raffle tickets; Bill Gittins for leading us in the pledge; and to Martin Miller-Hessel for the invocation and this bulletin.
Next up to bat is: Set up: Dale Sipe; Greeting visiting Rotarians: Ginny Pitts; Raffle Ticket Sales: Bob Lucas; Pledge: Bill Imboden; Invocation: John Withers; and Bulletin Writer: YOU (Don't wait! Call now 576-7632). If you can't make it be sure you contact Janet Codding at 576-0416.

It will run through June 21st at the Lincoln Arts theater, 709 Davis Street, Santa Rosa.
