Back from the future: Valinoti

For reasons unexplained again, President Jim Valinoti was back in charge. Henry Von Der Mehden led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Mark Decker’s nine point “Rotary Moment”:

  1. Face reality.
  2. Assume and fulfill your responsibilities
  3. Do what is right and you will be right.
  4. Treat others with dignity and respect.
  5. Be sure to thank people for their help.
  6. Leverage your strengths and neutralize your weaknesses.
  7. You are the only one who can control your attitude.
  8. The only good thing about your failures is that they are not permanent.
  9. Strive for excellence, not perfection.

Group Study Exchange

Joe Perez introduced Rotarian and members of the Group Study Exchange from District 1910 , the world’s only Multi-National District, representing Austria, Croatia and Hungary (Slovenia is in the district but not on the Exchange).

They visited County offices including our own “Mike,” Mike Mullins' District Attorney's offices, and Joe Perez's Communications Office this morning.

Group spokesperson said the district is growing rapidly, with club 86 added just this past weekend, including 3500 members. 90 clubs anticipated by the end of the year.

He reminded us that Vienna will be the site of Rotary convention in 2002 and the year 2000 computer bug will be past history.  We each were given a schilling to encourage us to start saving for the trip.

President Jim demonstrated American savvy by trading one out-dated West Santa Rosa banner for three of their new ones!

Conferences District and International

Prez Jim pitched the District 5130 Conference, May 29-31. Mike Merrill has the forms. Register before May 8th and get a discount. We can pick the events we want to attend... but don’t miss former R.I Director Rick King at noon on Friday, or the Saturday party. Attendance will count as a make-up.

Watch the mail for information on status of Paul Harris giving.  This year’s 21 (!) new Paul Harris Fellows from our club will be recognized at our Celebration, June 27 - by District Gov-to-be, Mike Merrill.

Race to Indy!

ALWAYS AFTER A HAND-OUT (Well, not always...)

According to the Prez, Mike Arendt is wearing a metaphorical “new suit," a reference to his new job with Luther Burbank Savings, that cost Mike a $5 fine.  Jim Hinton sold his house. He also retired from practicing law (applause) but claims he is still active with other things.  Our esteemed President,  Jim Valinoti,  started to sneak in a pitch for his employer, but was caught by the ethics police in the form of this week’s editor.  Sergeant at Arms levied a $100 fine and Jim got a chance to identify Spring Lake Village.  Hinton matched that with a Paul Harris contribution.

5498_5.jpg (13089 bytes)Long after the Crab Feed, when Michael Moore and Bob Marigo (right) bid $900 for a dinner for 12 prepared by Ginny Pitts and Scott Bartley, they finally collected.   The fare was truly gourmet with Asparagus soup and on to Ahi, but among the many outstanding entrees was a specially prepared Swanson Hungry Man Meat and Potatoes TV Dinner for Bob. The cat helped with a personalized paw print (so the story goes) on the cheese cake.  Thanks, all - and no fine!

Program:  THE CURTAIN RISES

Marilyn Smith came to the rescue of the Mt. Tamalpais Mountain Theater during the troubled 70’s. As Executive Producer she introduced a series of winning outdoor musicals (among them “Fiddler on the Roof”, “The King and I”, “Music Man” and “76 Trombones”). Extension performances now happen at nearby Jack London State Park, with seating for 2000 and the
bugs out of the bus shuttle.

The sub-theme of her presentation was this: can Michael Moore run a slide projector? General consensus was that Mike should keep his day job.

Marilyn gave us a review of the origins of the Mountain Theater in 1913 when William Kent donated 7 acres with a spectacular view of the Bay Area.  With a design based upon an ancient Sicilian theater, the original board worked with a shoe-string budget. for over 20 years spectators sat on the grass.  In 1933 Franklin Roosevelt sent Eleanor to talk to unemployed W.W.I Veterans, the “Bonus Marchers” and came up with the idea of the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps).   In 1929 Herbert Hoover sent Douglas MacArthur to chase those same marchers out of town.  Marilyn  showed slides of the placement of a few of the over 4000 two- to three-ton boulders for the seating, and of planting a tan oak that today can shade 250 afternoon attendees. The daughter of the project supervisor recently made them available to her.

Frosting on the cake came in the form of 4 numbers from this year’s hit, “Hello Dolly” by two talented singers and their accompanist. Thanks, Marc Matson for another great program.  The second song, makes a fine #10 to our Rotary Moment 9: “If you ain’t got elegance, you can never carry it off!”
