If You Start Me Up...

A few minutes before the customary 12:30 PM launch time, President Jim Valinoti rose, squared his shoulders, clanged the bell and brought us to order.  Tom Skinner broadcast the Pledge of AllegianceMartin Miller-Hessel gave the invocation, recalling the great American painter,  James Abbott MacNeil Whistler.  Whistler had ordered some canvasses, and they got lost in the post. The Post Office asked if the canvasses were valuable, to which Whistler replied, "not yet."  Martin likened our club assembly to a blank canvas and asked God to help us put something of lasting value on it.

Holland Trip for Club Kids!

Gil Lucas again reminded us that great opportunity for your children, if they are juniors or seniors in high school, approaches.  For years our club has done its own exchange program with some Rotary clubs in Holland.  Last year we hosted kids, and this year it is time for us to send kids to Holland.  There are four spots available for 17-18 year olds for the summer trip to Holland. This special trip is open to any Santa Rosa West Rotary member's children who would like three weeks as the guest of a Dutch family. They will need to pony up air fare of about $900.   The trip is from July 15 to August 7.  Call Gil at 526-1139 (work) or 579-4678 (home.)

Raffle Mix-up

Jim Valinoti, obviously anxious to get to the Club Assembly going, dismissed the visiting Rotarians, and tried to postpone the raffle, but a sustained grumbling (much of it from the Mike Moore Syndicate) forced him to whip out the marbles and have a drawing.  Bill Dodson from the aforementioned syndicate got to draw a non-winning marble, and George Mickelson pocketed the $20 consolation prize.

On-line Forum set for 25 April

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its educational programs, RI is planning a special on-line event for 1997-98 Rotary scholars on Saturday 25 April 1997 at http://www.rotaryscholars.org

While the "live" portions of the event are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.(1300hrs) EST, those who visit the site in days leading up to the event will find much to hold their interest.

Program:  Club Assembly

Jim Valinoti led off the Club Assembly with an articulate exploration on passion and arrogance.  He has brought passion to the  presidency and tried to avoid arrogance.  18 months of preparation helped him assume office.  Just before the PETS (President Elect Training Seminar), Bob Marigo told Jim, "You can't do it all."  Yet at the PETS conference, he was told, you can do it all and he was urged to go against the status quo, to change things in your club that discourage full participation.

There have been changes, changes for the better in this club under Jim:  changes in billing, special events and the raffle.  A special "End-of-Year Celebration"  will replace the Debunking.

Jim sent all members a special mailing on February 20 of this year concerning a proposed change in the way officers are selected.  Seven Past Presidents have communicated to Jim that they thought the present method of selection was adequate, but that it could be improved.   They urged Jim to appoint a committee to investigate new methods of selection and report back to the club.  Jim said he appreciated the sage counsel of the past presidents and will appoint that committee which will report back before the end of the Rotary Year.

Rich Standard, our incoming President, talked about the Rotary Foundation.  It's the thing that makes Rotary special:  we are the only service club with an international foundation that promotes world peace and understanding.  You can leverage your club's ability to help to four times its spending power with the Foundation.   You can use a Carl P. Miller discovery grant for International travel to explore places and methods to help.

Mike Merrill reported on the District Assembly in Ukiah this last weekend and talked about how the disbursements from the Foundation and the Community Fund worked.
