A benign opening

After President Jim Valinoti woke us up, Arnie Carston got us organized with the pledge in style. Jim Sullivan shared one of his   inspiring Rotary moments,  urging us to relax, take a deep breath and be thankful.   John Palmer, one of our most active and long lasting members,  introduced the Visiting Rotarians

Special Recognition Dept. (a.k.a.: fines!)

Marv Hyman (right), celebrating the birth of his 12th grandchild; he also treated us to a little "one-upsmanship" dialogue with our glorious leader (you had to be there) - $100 offered to Paul Harris. 41398_1.jpg (14102 bytes)
41398_3.jpg (12765 bytes) Laurie Burmeyer (left) paid a 1% commission for a $5,000 photo in the paper - outstanding customer service award for sales in parts and service somewhere down on the "original auto row" - sorry, no commercials allowed.

Guest Lee Geisenhoffer, founder of the SRWRC, was given special recognition without a fine. Welcome back!

News from Rotary International on World Community Service

Service and Fellowship on a Global Scale
World Community Service, or WCS, gives Rotarians an opportunity for fellowship with an important
difference -- humanitarianism.  Initiated in 1967, WCS allows Rotarians in two countries to join forces to help those in need. And Rotarians do, providing an estimated US$20 million in funds and donations-in-kind each year.

WCS encompasses a variety of Rotarian efforts. It includes international projects, where Rotarians in two countries have met, either through the WCS Projects Exchange, or at international conventions or other meetings, via Group Study Exchange teams, or through many other ways. It includes projects that have received Matching Grants from The Rotary Foundation and many that have not. It includes projects where partners have pooled funds, have shared donated goods, and have sent volunteers.

WCS has only three criteria --

  1. the project must be humanitarian in nature;
  2. Rotarians in two or more Rotary countries must be involved;
    and
  3. one of those countries must contain the site of the project.

Program

Dr. Barry Silberg, a well known plastic surgeon and inventor with 18 years of local practice, discussed recent trends and techniques for facial modification, fat removal, and "nip and tuck" in general.    He showed several "before - after" slides, and saved the more dramatic and "graphic" photos until we had digested our meals.  He also helps the local economy by having out-of-town patients stay at our local hotels and dine at our favorite restaurants, and take home great Sonoma County wines to celebrate their weight loss or new nose.   Barry talked about his new Goretex mid-face implants.   He also discussed new techniques that involve more use of low frequency (1 MHz) / low power (3 watts) sound waves and less anesthetics than conventional surgical methods. His recent patented invention is code named EUA for External Ultrasound Assist.  This device is licensed to Wells Johnson to manufacture and sell for about $15,000 each. It uses an external transducer to help loosen fat cells, separate collagen cells, and absorb the right kind of energy in the right places. He used a lot of other terms that are difficult to spell, let along pronounce.
