Laura Bugbee Zlot is also celebrating her ( )??? birthday today -- somewhere -- but she escaped a fine, at least temporarily, because she wasn't at the meeting. Happy Birthday, Laura. I'll never tell your age.
John Dolinsek (Sunrise) also just turned 50. He was fined $65.00 for some reason, of which $15.00 was paid by Sunrise Past President Nancy Aita. John presented his jar of candy to Nancy as her reward.
Ty Pforsich was fined a paltry $20.00 for recently purchasing a used European car (year and model undisclosed).
Bill Gittins, Brian Herndon, Roger Olson, Ginny Pitts, and Chuck Stark were recognized for their recent anniversaries, all of them long-term marriages. Congratulations.
Dan Davis (Sunrise) was fined $15.00 for his wife's recent birthday. He declined to disclose Susan's age, smart lawyer that he is, presumably on grounds of attorney-client privilege.
Erich Carrizoli (Sunrise) was fined $20.00 for a New Year's Eve videotape filmed by his son at South Lake Tahoe.
Scott Eidler (Sunrise) was recognized for the Christmas-Day birth of a daughter, Brittany, his second child. It seems that his first child was the next preceding child born in the Sunrise Club!
Brian Herndon held the raffle ticket picked out of the bowl by Martin Miller-Hessel. Just as Brian was about to pull the black marble from the bag for a whopping $940.00, his forefinger inexplicably twitched and he drew a white one. Sorry, Brian.
Dennis Wilkinson won the $20.00 raffle. After President Jim explained the options to him, Dennis graciously donated the $20.00.
Our speaker today was a remarkable young man, Dave Pelzer, who earned a standing ovation with his inspirational lecture. In 1993, Dave was honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans. In 1994, he was the only United States citizen to be honored as The Outstanding Young Person of the World. He was also chosen to carry the Centennial Torch for the Olympic Games. Dave is the author of two inspirational books, A Child Called 'It' : An Abused Child's Journey from Victim to Victor, a New York Times Best Seller and a Pulitzer Prize nominee, and The Lost Boy : A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family.
As a boy, Dave was a victim of extreme physical abuse by his parents. He survived, and now has dedicated himself to helping others to overcome their obstacles and to better themselves.
Though still voice-disabled from childhood abuse, Dave spoke eloquently and inspirationally about the challenges he faced and conquered and how others can meet, understand and overcome their challenges.
With apologies to those Sunrise members whose names I missed or mis-spelled, this Bulletin was written by Jim Hinton.
