First Things

President Jim Valinoti dinged the bell close to 12:30.  Mike Merrill forthrightly led the pledge.  Judge Antolini gave us a wonderful Rotary Moment, in which he wished that all those politicians in Washington would only apply the Four Way Test

Sell, sell, sell this week

Dennis Crandall did his last report on the Raffle for the fabulous Windstar Cruise.  We have sold about 630 tickets. The drawing will be next week at the party on Monday, October 13, at the Cantina downtown. Sell, sell, sell this week. Get any sold ticket stubs to Dennis before 5:00 next Monday. Our goal is to sell all one thousand, but we'll be happy with something in the 800's or 900's. Remember this and the crabfeed are the big club fundraisers.

Mark your calendars...

Of Harvest Fair Winners and Globe Trotting

Joe Perez, back from Down Under brought us a banner from a Rotary Club in Christchurch, New Zealand.  This was worth $20.

President Jim saw Brian Herndon's wife at theHarvest Fair.  Brian had been business tripping to exotic Minneapolis for a boring software seminar. Fined $20.

Speaking of the Harvest Fair, our Bill Dodson won best of show for his Cabernet in the Home Wine Competition.

John Withers showed off his new eyes, courtesy of the Mayo Clinic.

Gittins gets Harris Don Ling, back from fly fishing on the Klamath river, is off soon to Paris and Monte Carlo. He returns briefly and then has to slog it off to Hawaii.

Bill Gittins (left) reported on a trip he and his wife Pat made with Sandy and Bob Harris through New England from September 20 to October 1st. Gittins claims that Harris, too cheap for a car rental, had to be driven like Miss Daisy, all over New England. While stopping at the Squire Taxbox Inn near Wiscassett, ME, they met Peter Taylor and his lovely wife Olive (below). Peter is a Past District Governor of District 106 which is located in Central England. A very pleasant evening was spent by all and lasting friendships were established.

Bill Withers used his new peepers to find the winning draw-the-marble ticket, but failed to draw the winning marble. Patsy Branes (right) won the $25 ticket and gave it the Community Fund.

Program

Willem Houwink, an Economics Professor with a fascinating background and career, gave a thought-provoking talk about the economics, infrastructure and the future of the Peoples Republic of China. Willem, a native of the Netherlands, has taught economics all over the world, from the Middle East to this country and for many years in China.

Patsy Barnes

One of his Chinese students when he first met him some decades ago, did not have the money for a cup of tea. Now he has both a Mercedes and a BMW. Another student is probably the most brilliant economist in China, but make very little money at the state school. The gap between rich and poor is growing in China. Although the telephones and taxis are more abundant and reliable in China now, the infrastructure is still weak. Highways and central heating are lacking. Food is going to be a big problem. Willem is optimistic about the fate of Hong Kong.
