The 1,250th meeting found silver-tongued President Bill Gittins in a rare feisty mood. He was quick on the draw with wit and one-liners. Chris Roselle led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Bob Marigo delivered the shortest invocation on record.

Rene Ocana (below left), whose English (his 5th language) is superior to many of us in the room, gave a humorous introduction of visiting Rotarians. Bruce Anderson from the Sebastopol Club is below right.

Announcements and Great Causes

Gil Lucas reported that money has been turned in for only 250 out of the 1000 tickets issued to date for Travel Extravaganza. All members are urged to get the money in ASAP.

Mark Decker announced that the Poyntless Systars will entertain us at the Crab Feed.

Bob Marigo updated the S-O-S (Support our Students) Program:
Highlights over past two years: from 3 to 18 schools; counselors increased from 6 to 18; counseling hours from 40 to 200; budget from $10k to $100k. Three awards have been received - Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce (Spirit of Santa Rosa), Board of Education, and Jack London Society. WSR donated $3,000 plus a lot of time toward this outstanding cause.

Paul Ahern from the Novato Club advised us that permit processing cooperation from the city of Santa Rosa on the Pre-school Project is excellent. (Maybe we should get Paul to negotiate the wastewater deal).

Mary Farha reminded us that the deadline to apply for GSE team leader is October 9. Applications for team members must be submitted by November 2. The Finland trip is scheduled for April 13 to May 10, 1997.

Marc Matson reported on a new program that he and other health professionals have initiated. Kids' Day America resulted in health screening of many children, thanks to donated time and facilities. To top it off, Marc donated $500 to the SOS program - a class act!

Tango Argentina
Oops, Ambassador! The keynote speaker at the Foundation Dinner South on November 16th will be the Argentine Ambassador, Sr. Luis Maria Riccheri. Not Argentine Consul Sr. Gustavo Bequet as previously announced. Apologies!

Craft Talk

Jim Hinton presented a concise overview of his career. He graduated from Stanford, did a stint in the USAF in Spain, and obtained his law degree from UCB in 1964. He came to Santa Rosa after graduation and started his legal practice with the former Spridgen firm. He is a civil law trial attorney specializing in defense of fraud, negligence and malpractice. Clients include engineers, contractors, real estate professionals, and public agencies. He resides in Santa Rosa with his wife Carolyn. All four children have successful careers. (Should they be supporting Jim and Carolyn?)

Last week's craft talk by Ray Mattison should have included some personal background. He came from Southern Calif., and his wife, Ursula, is from Switzerland. They have no children, having moved a lot with three overseas assignments. Ray received his MBA while working in the electronics industry, and went into the commercial appraisal business in the mid-80's.

Raffle

No one drew the black marble. Dennis Wilkinson was quick to donate his $20 to the Foundation.

Sunshine

Get well cards were circulated for Charlotte Imboden who is undergoing extensive medical treatment, and Barbara Rubins who recently had surgery. Our best wishes!

Fines

Jim Sullivan got off with $10 for some old cards and a cribbage board (you had to be there).

Mike Merrill (below left) was nailed $100 for a trip to Tennessee and the Grand Ole Opry, and not for introducing a politician.

Jeff Blakesly (above right) found out that his new FAA instrument rating would cost another $100.

Program

Nancy Jo Ramsey introduced our speaker, Margaret Purser, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Anthropolgy at SSU. She discussed a unique educational resource sharing, bridge building program through the SSU Center for Pan Pacific Exchange. This is a nonprofit group coordinating specialized research, education and student-teacher exchanges throughout the Pacific Rim. They network with many other universities.

One local project is a field study in the Sacramento River Delta where they found some Gold Rush era items.

Dr. Purser teaches with "tele-learning", expanding computer links around the world. For more information, contact her at Pan.Pacific@Sonoma.edu or visit their web site http://www.sonoma.edu/org/ppe/.
