INTRODUCTION
New president Bill Gittins opened the meeting with the observation that the club has held 1239 meetings before this current one; this was news everyone had waited to hear. Jim Sullivan led the club in an orally correct pledge. John Palmer gave the invocation, giving thanks for the 1239 meetings and praying that the next 52 will be better than the last 52. Ed Burr introduced 12 visitors from other clubs.
President Gittins asked Past President Sizemore to the podium where Pat presented President Bill the president's pin. Bill gave Pat a past president's pin, termed a ticket to the HBC (Has Been's Club) by Pat, and a new badge. For those who have not heard, the Debunking of President Pat will take place on July 13 at Mike Merrill's. The club will be dark the Monday thereafter.
CONVENTION IN CALGARY
President Bill spoke about the Rotary convention in Calgary. He described some of the activities, the Canadian ambience, and the excellent facilities. Bill related the 1996-97 theme of Rotary International President Luis Vicente Giay of Argentina. The theme is, "Build the Future with Action and Vision." President Giay wishes Rotarians everywhere to honor the past, educate themselves about Rotary, prepare new generations by mentoring, build urban peace, and support the Rotary Foundation. He advocates leadership with a focus on both the head and the heart.
The 1997 convention will take place in Glasgow, Scotland. We should begin preparing now, said President Bill. President Bill then brought Jim Valenotti to the podium to give him a next president's pin, a Glasgow pin, and a stylish cap done in the official Rotary tartan.
CHANCES
For $860 Past Past President Mike Merrill drew a nice marble but no prize. The chance for $20 resulted in a contribution.
PROGRAM BY INTERNET
Bob Harris introduced Judy Prior, an independent marketing consultant who helps businesses harness the marketing power of the Internet and the World Wide Web. She gave an on-line program, connected to the WWW as she spoke.
First some history: The Internet began in 1957 following the launch of Sputnik; it was a military network then. The World Wide Web became public in 1992 and there were about a million computer hosts on the Internet. Mosaic entered the picture in 1993, and by 1996 the Internet has a reported 38 million users with 35,000 new domain registrations every month. The Internet has numerous search engines available for the use of ordinary people who have a computer, a modem, a phone line, and a dial-up connection such as America On-Line, Compuserve or a local provider.
Judy unveiled the West Santa Rosa Web Site and several of its pages -- links, projects, calendar, and bulletin. President Bill noted that the club can save $3000 to $4000 per year by using the web site or faxes for the bulletin and thus invest the savings in community projects. By a handout each member present selected a way to receive the bulletin. The bulletin will come to you via web site, by fax, by regular mail, or by a stack of bulletins at each meeting, depending on your needs. The West Santa Rosa Rotary web site can be found at http://www.sr-rotary-west.org
Judy provided handouts for each table. These useful documents show clearly the benefits of putting a business on the WWW and describe how the Internet can work for you. Of that there is little doubt.
Thanks to Judy Prior for a most interesting and informative program.
