| FYI! Saturday, 6/28/97 -- The Debunking of President Gittins - 5:00 p.m. at the Wikiup Racket, Golf and Swim Club - Takes the place of our June 30 meeting. Tailgate Party & Crushers Baseball: Monday, July 14th -- Details and Sign Up Form |
Our 1,283rd meeting, the last in the reign of William the Great, began with Pete Hoogland leading the pledge of allegiance and Bob Zeni giving an invocation of congratulation and gratitude to our president, Bill Gittins, for his effective leader-ship. Visiting Rotarians were introduced by Dennis Wilkinson.
Past-Presidents Plaque: It is updated and on display in the lobby.
Paul Harris Excess Credit: Today is the last day (unless you do it tomorrow) to get whatever information Chuck Stark wants to Chuck Stark.
Crushers Baseball Game/BBQ: Sign up now, and not later than July 7, to attend old-time baseball fun, preceded by a tailgate party and barbeque, on Monday, July 14th. This party/barbeque/game is in lieu of the regular meeting. The tail-gate party starts at 5:30 pm and the game (vs the red-hot Chico Heat) is at 7:05 pm. It's hard to believe, but the cost is only $13.00 for adults and an incredibly discounted $12.00 if you're a 12-and-under kid. And here's the deal-closer: this low price includes one drink ticket. Click here to print a sign up form.
Club Golf Tournament: It is going to be a major challenge, perhaps even an insurmountable challenge, to defeat 1996 defending champions Chuck Stark and Jim Hinton, but that is the challenge. This year the club tournament will be on Friday, September 12th, and the action will be at the Oakmont East Course.
Ambassadorial Scholarship: Miguel Valario, the Amazonian Indian who will be attending Oxford University on an Ambassadorial Scholarship next fall, will be at the Sebastopol Community Center on July 11th for an evening of entertainment which features Peruvian Music. The cost is $10.00, which averages about $5.00 per hour because the program will last about two hours.
Tanzania Update: As a result of Mike Merrill's visit to Africa earlier this year and his contact with the Rotary Club in Moshe, Tanzania, we will soon hear a proposal to assist abandoned children there.

Blue Badges were awarded to John Ramzy, Bo Simons, Bill Dodson, and Anne Abrams. All of them are outstanding new members and we welcome them. |
President Bill either exhausted the unfined or underfined list, or exhausted the fine time. So, there were no fines levied today.

The short speech today was by a visitor, Ryan Colbe, an Eagle Scout from Troop 125, who will be attending the International Jamboree this summer in Virginia because of the generous grant to him by our club. But for this grant, Ryan could not go with his Scouting friends to the Jamboree. His Scoutmaster, Keith Young, described Ryan as the most active and energetic Scout in the troop. He attained the Eagle rank even before he became 16. Ryan graciously thanked the Club for the grant and for the opportunity of his lifetime to go to the Jamboree.
The long speech today was by president-to-be-next-meeting, Jim Valinoti, who described the Rotary Convention in Glascow, Scotland, from which he had just returned. Some 20,000 to 30,000 Rotarians attended this convention. It was a fantastic and exhilarating experience for Jim, and he was clearly pumped up as he described it. He brought back some gifts for president-to-be-next-year, Rich Standard.
It was 33 marbles and $480.00, but Chuck Baker didn't draw the single black marble. Bob Marigo won the $20.00 ticket. He donated it to "the fund."
The program today was not a program, but rather a club assembly, during which outgoing president Bill Gittins reviewed the sound financial standing of the club and the accomplishments during his presidential term. The staggering total of $52,975.00 was contributed to the community this last year from fund-raising events, and many major accomplishments were reviewed, including completion of the club's efforts related to the Multicultural Pre-School Project, which contributed to our first place district award for community service.

President Bill recognized and thanked his board members for their devotion and extraordinary service. All of them--Val Mazzoni, Patrick Sizemore, Rich Pratt, Gil Lucas, Chris Roselle, Robin Marrs, Ken Dansie, Paul mSchwartz, Nancy Ramsey, Bob Harris, Ginny Pitts, Mary Farha, Pagan Cruitt, and Jim Valinoti--were warmly applauded by the members in recognition of their efforts.
And then President Bill Gittins, with only three minutes left in the meeting, described his incredible journey as president of this club. He didn't need to say much. Everyone knows that he has been an exceptional leader. A standing ovation of several minutes' duration was his reward. Thanks, Bill. You've been great.
