Santa Rosa West

President Bill Gittins called the 1,279th meeting of the Santa Rosa West Rotary to order at 12:24 PM, with his usual flair, receiving a round of applause when he announced that he had but a few more meetings as President. Roger Olson led the flag salute, and John Palmer the invocation. Charles Olson introduced the visiting Rotarians.
Ken Dansie ascended the podium with two Santa Rosa High School students, Mark Hoyal and Greg Valentine, who each received a vocational scholarship from the club to aid them in their studies at Santa Rosa Junior College.
The district conference looms May 30 through June 1 in Eureka. Next week, May 26, the club is dark in honor of Memorial Day. The following Monday, June 2, there will be no luncheon meeting, but one at 4:30 PM that day at the Multicultural Center, to celebrate its opening. Members are expected to attend. Roger Olson announced that there is an air show featuring two (count 'em, two) P-38 Flying Mustangs this weekend at the Santa Rosa Airport.
Tom Skinner, even though he spent a short week in Hawaii and participated in the San Jose Triathalon, missed a fine because he's a bleeding heart. Arnie Carston enjoyed the same fate, after relating his recent wooziness. However he did pay an $8 fine for Marvin Hyman as part of some past fining frenzy.
John Ramsey got tapped for $50 for his trip to Boston with a return leg to Southern California. Bob Miller put $23, no make that $27, for being seated near the back of the room.
Chef Joseph Keller paid $50 for his Internet site (http://sterba.com/sro/josef/) featuring a lush picture of himself sampling wine and a Real Audio clip of himself in both German and English extolling the virtues of his menu and wine list. Curtis Reinhardt coughed up $50 after relating that this very web site has garnered praise from Rotary International as a model for what a Rotary web site should be.
Chuck Olson got fined $20 for introducing the visiting Rotarians and only making three mistakes. Roger Olson contributed $20 for his announcement of the air show. Nancy Ramsey has recently traveled to South Carolina and San Angelo, Texas, to learn her new computer software and visit her daughter, respectively.
Denis Winkinson won a chance at the marble, but failed to draw the correct one. Henry "Von" Von Der Mehden won the $20 and put it towards the scholarship fund.
Today was Past Presidents day, and 16 past presidents made the meeting, and 16 past presidents who were honored in absentia. Two past Presidents, Bill Fisher and Carson Mitchell, led an energetic program, exploring both what we will be doing in the year 2030 and what it takes to be great club.
Carson got some figures from various past Presidents. Fred Lincoln opined that we should all live to 95. Soon-to-be-Past President Bill Gittins proposed that we should all retire at 25, go to work at 65 and work until we die. Knock Raj put the present population of India at 948 million and predicted that Santa Rosa would be home to 500,000 by the year 2030. Carson did some memorable extrapolation with this data.
Bill Fisher then took the podium and analyzed whether size made a club strong. A small club often has great spirit, and the feeling of camaraderie is intense at that level. Looking at area clubs, however, those gaining in membership are the larger ones. Clubs need to constantly recruit new members, and keep the club vital and fun.
