The 1,273rd meeting started "normally" with Chuck Baker leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Henry Von der Mehden doing one of the shortest invocations on record, and Roger Olson eloquently introduced visiting Rotarians - nice job all of you! However, after introductions of guests, our most glorious potentate Bill Gittins soon lost control of the meeting when he tried to get the audience to "flagellate" itself. Judging from the snickers around the room, it was clear that a semantics problem required definition - something about being "windy" vs. whipping ourselves. Some people suggested that both "events" happened concurrently in todays meeting.
April 19 - District Assembly in Ukiah. Board members, committee chairpersons and Red Badge holders are strongly encouraged to attend. The club pays for this; you have only to show up; carpools are being arranged; Curtis Reinhardt has to return to Santa Rosa early, if anyone wants a ride back then.
April 26 and May 3 (tentative dates) - Paul Ahern of the Novato club announced that four groups of volunteer work parties are being organized to complete landscaping at the Multi-cultural Center; catered lunches will be provided. Please sign up - we need your help!
May 31 and June 1 - District Conference in Eureka; this is a great opportunity to learn more about Rotary and to really get involved; the weather should also be great! Make it an extended weekend.
June 2- The dedication of the new Multi-cultural Center; time: 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. This counts as a meeting. Be sure to attend to see your volunteer efforts and $$ at work.
Arnie Carsten announced that he is phasing out of this role, and that Marc Matson will be taking over.
Gary Antolini did not draw the black marble - (Bill, check your pockets!!). Bill Dean donated his $20 to the scholarship fund.
Ken Danzie introduced four students who received
recognition and $250 scholarships rom our Club for use at Santa Rosa Junior College. The
students and their objectives are: Amy Aiello, forestry or botany; Scott Simpson,
Emergency Medical Technician; Zoe Awalom, continuation of her work helping disabled
people; Jerome Mitchell, physical education and teaching career. Congratulations!!
Bob Marigo and Bob Miller amid great fanfare (you
had to be there!) presented certificates for shoes redeemable at Roseland Shoe Mart to
Kiko Lester of Lincoln School (33 certificates), Patricia McCaffrey of Fremont School (40
certificates), and Mary Lou Herrera of Monroe School (41 certificates). Each certificate
has a face value of $40±. Thanks to Chris Rosell for the announcement published in the
Press Democrat!
President Bill "lost it" when he started
talking to himself about his new Lexus. Before the guys with the white coats and straight
jackets could nab him, he committed himself to a fine of $50. Ann Abrams (right) received
no sympathy for a trip to "Mo-town" with snow and spring weather a day apart.
She matched the $50. Bill Dean paid the same for engineering two corporate financial deals
(this could be the subject of an interesting program); Gary Dugger negotiated a $50 match
for his two trucks, even though he "ratted" on Brian Herndon; Lynn Giovanello
escaped (see you next time); Bob Leland $50 - future trip via the Midwest to visit his son
in Charleston, WV
Tom Tessier introduced Brad Bollinger, Press Democrat Business Editor who discussed Business Globalization and Information Age Technology. He announced that Annie Wells had just been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her dramatic photos of the Matanzas Creek rescue two years ago. He recently returned from Mexico and Central America where his group visited facilities of local companies including HP, Los Manos and Thanksgiving Coffee.
Brad uses the Internet as a place to get information that is useful both on and off the job, and to see what the competition is doing. He displayed a few web pages and discussed how he uses those. He characterized the tearing down of the Berlin Wall as an economic event that contributed to business globalization. He also discussed the heavy investment in people and knowledge vs. raw materials. Change is considered good for business, including infusion of capital and more work for attorneys. Visit the PD website at http://www.pressdemo.com for specialized data on travel, non-profit groups, etc. Brad said this is not just the newspaper on the computer.
