The camera turned...
Richard Standard Day

Opening Bell

President Bill Gittins opened our 1276th meeting with his usual ebullient "Good Afternoon" greeting. John Ramzy led the pledge of allegiance and President-elect Jim Valinoti gave the invocation. John Withers introduced 17 visiting Rotarians and they were warmly welcomed.

Today was "key employee" day, and many members brought and introduced their special employee, except Bill Fisher, whose key employee found it necessary to introduce him!

Announcements (Just Two)

Anne Abrams requested sign-ups for next Saturday, May 3rd, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. to continue the landscaping work at the Multicultural Preschool. All available members are encouraged to be there to help. Last Saturday a lot of work was done, and it seems that Carl Anderson outlasted the much-younger Phil Talamantes on the shovel brigade.

President Bill thanked Mike Moore for his generosity in hosting the fireside chat (without fire) at his office last Thursday evening. Thanks, Mike, from everyone who was there.

Raffle

Laura Bugbee got the opportunity to win $420.00 with the winning raffle ticket, but she failed to draw the black marble.

Don Ling was the $20.00 raffle ticket winner, which he graciously donated to the club.

Awards And Recognitions

Tom Tessier was specially recognized as the club's newest Paul Harris Fellow. President Bill and Chuck Stark presented the award to him. Tom gave a $1,000 check on the very day he received his Blue Badge.

President Bill, Master of Recognition

Ken Kushnir, who is building a house in Mexico and is having some difficulty in finding local workers there, was fined $20.00 for this project, but considering the 3,200 square feet size of the house, this amounts to less than a penny a foot.

Joseph Keller, a stellar member of our ski team, was fined a whopping $50.00, not for his skiing prowess, but--well, only President Bill can explain it. Nobody understands what a "safe return" fee is.

Sally Kennedy was also fined $50.00, but for a recognizable reason. Her company recently received an "Outstanding Employer" award for hiring disabled people.

Robin Marrs, who in his retirement has been busier than ever before, was fined $30.00. He has been on the northern California lecture circuit teaching applied ethics to CDF employees, an early intervention program intended to deal with discrimination issues. This work has kept him away the last four or five Mondays.

Craft Talk

Bo Simmons gave a really good craft talk. He was formerly a member of the Healdsburg Rotary Club and is now joining our club. He grew up as a surfer in La Jolla and gained some religion with a few big waves. He shifted to literature and other intellectual pursuits at UCLA and graduated from UCLA Library School in 1978. His first job as a librarian was in Orange County, followed by a stint in beautiful Roseville. He came to Sonoma County in 1988 and since then has worked at the Central Library and the Wine Library, and he is now focused on an Internet Library challenge. Bo is married and has a daughter, age 10, and a son, age 8. Welcome, Bo.

Program

Our own Mike Merrill was the featured speaker today. Mike, a Past President, recently returned from Tanzania, where he and another Santa Rosa friend climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa at 19,321 feet.

Mike presented a slide show and tell describing the trip. Although many climbers need oxygen above 14,000 feet, Mike did not require oxygen at all. The climb and descent took 6 days, through savannas, rain forests, volcanic moonscapes, and glaciers. To avoid the possibility of adverse weather conditions at the peak, the final 3,500 feet ascent was begun at midnight. Mike reached the peak at about 6:30 a..m., where he had a spectacular view of the cloud cover below.
