President BILL GITTINS presided over today's meeting, No. 1,268 on this 3rd day of March, 1997. The flag pledge was led by BOB HARRIS followed by the invocation as given by ARNIE CARSTON.
CURTIS REINHARDT announced the visiting Rotarians. ARTHUR LaFRANCHI of Petaluma came the longest distance to visit our club.
President GITTINS announced that we will NOT have a luncheon meeting on Monday, March 17th, but instead, will have an evening meeting in celebration of St. Patrick's Day at 5:30 p.m. on Third Street in downtown Santa Rosa at the ALE WORKS Restaurant. This restaurant is the location of the former Good Earth Restaurant. And, a reminder that if you do not attend a make-up is necessary.
President GITTINS thanked JEFF RAY (below right) for the excellent Ski Party that our Club members had in the High Sierra Mountains. The Downtown club won the honors for the senior age group and our club won because of our vitality and youthful members.

Also, recognized back from deep in the Amazon Jungle was NEIL SILVERMAN (above left). Neil has been providing dental services to the people deep in the Jungles of Brazil. See past bulletins for further details on this project. President Bill thanked Neil for the job well-done down there in the jungle.
BOB MARIGO announced the S.O.S. entire staff and group will present the Program next week and will explain to all the progress that is being accomplished.
In the recognition forum, President GITTINS called upon JIM HINTON (right) and thanked him for writing some of the bulletins, but reminded him that he misspelled the name of the President of our club (It's GITTINS, not GITTENS, GITENS, and any other of the myriad of possibilities). Also, Jim and two fellow Rotarians JOHN HATHAWAY and KEN PROUTY had a nice skiing vacation at Whistler in British Columbia. Each were fined $20.00 except for Jim who was fined only $3.00. This was the amount required to bring him to Bleed Heart status.
PETER LAMONICA was fined $50.00 for sporting a new BMW. He also donated an extra $50.00 to the Foundation. JOHN PALMER was congratulated for his article published in the Rotarian Magazine and fined $25.00. JOE PEREZ was recognized and fined $25.00.
Because of Gay LaBaron's article in today's Press Democrat about "Where has all the COLOR in clothes gone?", Bill asked all our members to stand that were wearing bright color clothes and sweaters. Some of us standing were JOHN WITHERS, PHIL TALAMANTES and, of course, today's Bulletin Editor DALE SIPE. All were wearing bright colorful sweaters. President GITTINS said he was thinking of only one color and that was RED. This happened to be the color of the sweater color DALE was wearing: That cost DALE $25.00.
The big news everyone was waiting for -- our Jack Pot is $350.00 -- The winning ticket was drawn by LAURA BUGBEE, but she didn't follow through and draw the black marble. The $20.00 drawing was won by PAGAN CRUIT, which she promptly donated to the Pre-School Fund.
ARNIE CARLSTON introduced our guest speaker from ZAP POWER SYSTEMS in Sebastopol, Mr. GARY STARR. Mr. Starr brought a new bicycle powered by battery to let anyone try it out. ZAP is making electric bicycles and selling them all over the world. Mr. Starr pointed out that there are 300,000 Chinese each day riding bicycles. About 470,000 of these are gas driven bicycles. Recently gasoline powered bicycles were banned in China because of the pollution they cause. This certainly opens the door for ZAP to sell clean electric powered bicycles to the Chinese. Mr. Starr went on to say that ZAP POWER SYSTEMS projects growth by the year 2000 to about 2,500,000 electric bicycles sold.
At 1:30 p.m. President GITTINS adjourned the meeting.
