RECOGNITION .
MICHAEL MERRILL is leaving soon to climb 19,300 feet to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Mike isn't flying his own plane but is going on British Airways. President GITTINS gave Mike our small American flag to place on the top of the mountain and to take a picture of it and then bring it back to our club. Mike was fined $20.00, but is a bleeding heart and passed the fine on to BOB MARIGO, who also is a bleeding heart. Mike then passed it on to a world traveler in our club, LOUIE CAPUANO.
KEN KUSHNIR for his trip to London was fined $20.00, but he also is a bleeding heart and passed the fine on to GINNY PITTS (left), also a bleeding heart. But, Ginny took the fine saying she doesn't pass fines on like everyone else.
CHUCK BAKER'S business, A&A Transmission, received the Consumer Value Star, which is granted to businesses with a high degree of customer satisfaction. He was fined $20.00 for the "company plug" and $10.00 for the award, a total of $30.00.
ROBIN MARRS (right) has retired from the California Department of Forestry. He is returning to a Re-engineering Party (a new term for 'retirement') and was fined $20.00.
ESTELLE MILLER was fined $30.00 for her trip to Hong Kong and Singapore.
The Raffle Jackpot total was $380.00 --- MIKE MERRILL drew the winning ticket, but failed to get the black marble. ROBIN MARRS won the $20.00 and donated it back to the club.
NANCY RAMSEY introduced our guest speaker LARRY CLARK from Sonoma State University. His topic was "What's ahead for the economy in 1997." A new development is a new wine business education program. The program will concentrate on extensive professional development for wine industry employees.
The program director is none other than Rotarian WALLY LOWRY (Downtown Club). Mr. Clark went on to say that for the economy as a whole, retail sales were down for the fourth quarter and there are some concerns still about "down-sizing" through 1997. California has come back so strong it will continue to be ahead of the national averages with respect to the economy.
He stated that the Social Security Task Force has recommended investment of Social Security Trust Fund dollars in the stock market. In the year 2008, the "baby boomer" generation will be at retirement age. The changes required in the Social Security system which will be needed then will present a significant challenge to the present system. He said, "he thinks the stock market is going to proceed to higher levels because of the fuel generated by the mutual funds." That it will continue to be stronger in the years to come.
He believes, Sonoma County will continue to grow because the quality of life here will attract more people to our pristine area. Tourism is another area that will continue to prosper in our county and can continue to be an important economic factor in the community.
President GITTINS presented our guest with a bottle of fine Sonoma County wine. The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m. See everyone next week for the CLUB ASSEMBLY MEETING.
