Jim Valinoti

Jim Valinoti (right) very ably stood in for Bill Gittins who was off doing something 'non-Presidential"! Tom Tessier led us in the pledge and Gary Dugger gave us an impromptu and all-inclusive invocation.

Very Sad News:

Laura Bugbee announced that Josef Keller's wife, Judy, has died. Judy has been very ill for a long time with cancer. Our heartfelt condolences to Josef at this difficult time.

Fines:

Harry Rubins paid $10 for giving talks on financial planning. Incidentally, Harry's wife, who has been very ill, is doing much better. Very glad to hear this, Harry!

Gil Lucas was fined $50 for his new boat even after donating it for the Crab Feed. There's no justice!

Ken Dansie was asked about his merger with Anderson and Company. He was deliberately obtuse in his reply to questions with the result that this writer doesn't know if he was fined or not...

Chuck Olson was fined for winning the Cardinal Newman Superbowl Pool.

Program: Ambassadorial Scholars

Curtis Reinhardt instructed us briefly on the ambassadorial program. This program sponsors about 1,200 scholars each year to study in a country other than their own. It is the largest and most international privately sponsored scholarship program in the world.

Each scholarship is worth about $22,000 towards tuition, travel and accommodations in the country of choice. The people who win these scholarships, apart from being outstanding scholars, will also have an ambassadorial gift which is favored by Rotary as part of its promotion of international understanding.

As an example of the sort of person who is an ambassadorial scholar he introduced Miguel Hilario.

Miguel has followed a circuitous route to Sonoma County and will later be studying at Oxford University as an ambassadorial scholar.

Miguel demonstrates blow gun
Miguel demonstrates the "blow gun" used by his native tribe for hunting.

He is a Peruvian Indian from the Amazon rain forest. (The fact that he was born in a canoe may explain his desire to explore the world.) He says, as he dons his native costume that his first exposure to the world beyond the forest were illustrations in the National Geographic magazine, brought by missionaries to his home area. He was later able to study in Lima, where he met a man from Petaluma. It was this acquaintance who was partly responsible for the beginning of his American journey which has taken him to Texas, Sonoma State University, and into marriage and parenthood.

Miguel played some of his native musical instruments for us (pan pipes below left and flute below right) and told many stories. When his audience is slow to laugh he would say "Indian Joke."

He is very concerned that the world hear and know about his people. In that connection he will be giving a talk at the Junior College on February 24th.

Here is a man who embodies the ambassadorial gift with charm and humor. As long as he keeps the canoe in mind he should go far! He gave us a most entertaining, informative and memorable program
