President Bill Gittins presided, Marvyn Hyman led us in the pledge and Martin Miller-Hessel helped us pray in his own inimitable style!
Visitors were introduced by Mike Arendt.
SOS (Save Our Schools):
Bob Marigo reported that sales of raffle tickets for the Crafts Fair had made $3,000 for the Quad Club SOS program. He also offered thanks to Mike Moore for making 5,000 photocopies of a flyer about the parenting classes being offered. These are for distribution in the schools.
Crab:
Mark Decker said that 17 "corporate tables" had been booked for the crab feed on February 1st. He urged people to buy their tickets soon, soon, soon!
On the same subject Phil Talamantes indicated that donations were coming in well but that there was room for more. He added that "if you can't think of anything to give, you can always send money!"
Fines:
Paul Schwartz was fined $15 for the discovery that he had been on a Group Study Exchange to the British Midlands fifteen years ago.
John Hatherway was fined $30 for a visit to his children and also for an African Safari. The safari was complete with outdoor living in tents, Elephants knocking down trees next to his tent (he did do the two week safari in a tent!) and baboons shouting at him. There's life yet in the bush.
Arnie Carston (below left) was fined $20 for moving out of a house which was "hers" into a house which is "ours."
Mike Arendt and Chris Rosell (above right) when questioned by Bill entered into discussions as to the profitability of their respective banks. Both are bleeding hearts. Mike passed his fine on to Roger Olson. Chris paid his ($20). (We don't remember Mike's fine, frankly!)
Raffle:
$390 was won by frequent visitor Paul Ahern (below left) who donated all the money to the Preschool. Generous! The $20 was won by Carl Anderson (below right) who promptly followed suit. He took the opportunity to tell us that the building project has cost overruns. One of which is for an extra fire hydrant, required by the Fire Department. (Isn't bureaucracy wonderful!!) So, as you can see every bit of extra cash helps!
This was a "State Of The Club" session and in keeping with Bill's pledge that we would know more about Rotary at the end of his presidency than at the beginning. The topics covered were as follows:
Name change:
This has now been accomplished at the International and district level. We are now The Santa Rosa West Rotary Club.
Treasurers report:
Rich Pratt reported that we are on budget. Donations have been made to the Boy Scouts, $1,000. Dental work being carried out by Neil Silverman and a team of dentists in Brazil. $1,000. The Quad Club's SOS program receives $3,000.
Club Foundation:
A board consisting of Phil Talamantes, Jim Valinoti, Pat Sizemore, Bill Gittins and Rich Pratt have met to discuss long standing issues related to the club "foundation" fund. This relates to the functions of the various funds which are at present under the guardianship of our club. As a result it may be necessary to make changes in the bylaws. These changes would come before the board and the membership in due course.
Additional fundraising events:
We had a successful Raffle which took place in late summer and fall. The prize was a flight to New York, Concorde SST trip to London, a week in London and a return on the QE-2. The value was about $16,000. The winner had the option of taking $10,000 in cash, which is what the winner (our own Richard Standard) decided to do. The result: $12,500 additional funds for the club to use for its projects.
Shoe program:
This will take place in the spring. $4,500 will be available to buy shoes for about 100 children in five schools.
Windfall:
A windfall for our Club's charitable funds is the gift of a Fourth Street commercial property to the club. The property is a gift from a donor who desired to present it to a charitable non-profit organization. The property has a mortgage, is rented and fully occupied. From this we have a positive cash flow for the Club until the property is sold. Following sale, which is imminent, the expectation is that the Club will realize about $20,000 in profit over and above income from the current tenants. Several people have volunteered to cover losses if we lose a tenant prior to sale.
The Preschool:
This project is due to be completed in a few months. See last week's bulletin where there are pictures of the prefabricated buildings arriving on site.
Crab Feed:
District Governor Larry Kavanaugh plans to attend our crab feed on the 1st February.
Membership:
We now have 96 members with attendance at 89%.
Past Presidents:
Bill offered thanks to past presidents who were being enormously helpful to the Club.
President Elect:
Jim Valinoti said that he was looking forward to his year as our president.
Help Needed
Gil Lucas urgently needs sergeants at arms to help set up and break down the room before and after our weekly meetings. Interested persons please contact Gil.
