BULLETIN

Monday, October 7, 1996

West Santa Rosa Rotarians chimed in with President Gittins to announce the 1251st. meeting. The pledge to the Republicans (Republic) was lead by Louis Capuano. Martin Miller-Hessel offered up a prayer for the inflated ego of Berkeley and popped ego of Southern Cal who lost to Cal for the first time in 26 years.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Sebastopol Club wanted West Santa Rosa to know about their major fundraiser, Midnight at the Oasis, and encouraged any Rotarians to attend their event.

Chris Rossell asked for a show of hands for those interested in ringing bells during the Holiday season. Coddingtown would like us to participate for a full week if possible.

Gil Lucas reminded all present that there was only three weeks left until the BIG RAFFLE. He encouraged all to continue to sell those tickets.

Bob Zenni will be bringing students next week for the first of the high school scholarship winners of the year.

Jeff Ray was called on, but passed the buck to Bill Fisher, to talk about the upcoming BBQ and Golf outing on October 25. Cost is $25 per person and needs to be in next week. He assured one and all that there were extravagant prizes awaiting our participation.

Bill then went on to offer his opinion on several other topics as long as he had the podium. He had opinions on the raffle and on the bell ringing announcements. After his discourse he announced he felt much better.

The Foundation dinner is November 16 and is entitled Night In Argentina. Chuck Stark says he still needs volunteers. Each Rotarian will be encouraged to commit to $100 for the year for the Foundation.

Bill Gittins reported that activity on the web page since July 1, 1996 has gone steadily up to an average of 38 hits per day. Folks are connecting from as far away as Australia, Canada, Spain, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. College connections include Princeton, Washington, Stanford, Arizona, and University of Calif. at San Francisco.

Bill also announced that there would be an orientation for new members within the next few days and to call Paul Schwartz for more information.

FINES:

Bob Miller, the Mighty Trojan, was given a trivia question around the USC/CAL football standings. He was fined $23 for his response.

Bill Fisher was nabbed for a $20 fine for redoing his billing cycle at work. Instead of billing every other month his son has determined it is more efficient to bill monthly.

Bob Zenni has been out and about for three weeks in Greece and Turkey. A dream of a lifetime was almost realized as he was finally to climb the Acropolis, only to learn it was closed down due to someone up on top threatening to blow it up........

President Gittins held an auction for a Dukakis/Bentson in '88 T-shirt and gave Bob Marigo the opening bid at 5 cents. The next bid was at 4 cents..... Ginny Pitts bought the shirt for $9.95 with Bob making up the 5 cent difference.

PRESENTATION:

HEALTH CARE FROM THE HEART was the title of the presentation by Santa Rosa West Rotarian Dr. Marc Matson.

Dr. Matson has "more than 17 years experience as a gentle, effective healer" and offers "a wide range of rehabilitative and health care services." Dr. Matson gave listeners a very quick and brief overview of how we can "invest in the wealth of health," and shared with us his story of his own disability and later recovery that altered his life. Matson believes that anyone who has once lost their health and later regained it will be changed for life.

Topics that Dr. Matson touched on were Walking the Road to Better Health, Exploring the Components of Wellness, and Design Your Own Wellness Program. Matson spoke about Functional Medicine, a way of evaluating health before there is a problem. Prevention and early detection allows us to make changes and choices we might not otherwise have. Matson said while he is not against medicine, the caregiver should keep asking "why" until there are no more answers, then medicine can be prescribed. He quoted Edison as saying, "The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."

Matson believes in The Triad of Health, striving for the balance of Mental/Emotional/ Spiritual health with Physical/Structural, and Nutritional/Biochemical. "Total health must be defined as a state of balance in each of these areas. A state of good health can be achieved by committing to know and follow a few simple principles." Dr. Matson handed out detailed booklets to all those in attendance.
